Anybody recommend a VAG specialst in the east of Scotland? I'm about to have another go at the ABS. :sadlike: If I can get readings from all four sensors and still end up with errors or flashing lights I'll need to put it in somewhere.... I'll be ******** if I'm paying Audi's prices, (and they probably won't do it anyway as quote 'it wasn't their original work in the first place' though I'm sure they'd still take my money to tell me I've got a problem with the ABS).

I use one place just south of Edinburgh
Neil Jeffrey at Carcraft - not a VAG specialist but he is very good. runs his own rally car, does lots of work on older Lancias, Porsche, Audi, VW etc.

short of that I stumbled on a Bosch specialist centre behind Eurocar parts near Edinburgh Airport. not used them but they are few and far between up here since the demise of Autowerks (who Neil also worked for!)

Got the new sensor in. Ran measuring blocks with a log (so I wouldn't have to watch while I driving!) All sensors measuring but with maybe 1kph difference. Is this enough to trigger the fault?
I'm not an egghead but if the ABS ring is traveling through the magnetic field futher away than where it should be but still registering would it return a higher or lower value?
The other thing is that I'm getting an error message which says 'Too many commucation errors to continue' though I'm guessing that this is due to my pound store VAGCOM & Cable :O)
I've also got that damn 65535 error code. I'm looking for advice on this but am now thinking that it's a the ECU module.

i think the slight difference will be down to things like tyre wear and suchlike, especially at higher speeds...

If all four sensors are reading correctly theres no reason it should be failing because of them. The speed signal is seen as a frequency. Moving the sensor closer will increase the amplitude (volume) of the signal but it wont change the speed.

If its a sensor fault, it will do its BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP and (!) thing AFTER you move away. If it does that immediately on starting the car then its unlikely to be a sensor (unless its open circuit).

What happens if you reset the codes while driving? Does the warning go off and stay off?

star? if it beeps when you put the ignition on chances are its the module on the pump.

^^^ Beep x3 doesn't come until the car is moving... If I stop the car with the warings flashing, reset the error codes and close the ABS module on vagcom the warning lights remain. I have to switch the ignition off and back on again to clear the red flashing ! then when I move off again I get the Beep x3 . The only persistant error code I get is 65535 00-10 intermitant.
I'm going to go with a couple of suggested garages. I've checked all the gaps as best I can without spliting the hub, all the ABS rings are intact and clean with no sign of cracking. Everthing seems ok. But obviously isn't. My recent log from measuring blocks does show one or two hiccups over a couple of 1/10ths sec. but nothing wierd.
MOT runs out on Friday. I'm off to Ireland for a week from Sunday so unless a miracle happens between now and Saturday I'll not be able to spend more time on it for about 10 days. Good job we've got two cars!

if the sensor is not the right one (there were three listed for my car) I assume a difference in resistance or just hardware may produce an error

Emailing BBA-reman to see if they'll take it back to retest. It's still under warranty from the last time they had it. Worth a try eh?

Ian.. what module did you replace, did you say you had a spare? I'm thinkin just to get me through my MoT...

you say there are hiccups? what does that mean exactly?

A hiccup from a faulty sensor is EXACTLY what would cause it to take the huff...

Are your new sensors all reading consistently?

Aye, I mean a discrepancy of a drop in speed by about 1or2 kph.. SPoken to couple of folks and they reckon that it's shouldn't be enough to throw the system. There has to be some tolerance there for going round corners, tread depth, bumps etc. A discrepancy of 5-10kph or more should trip the system not 1 or 2kph which is the extent of the hiccups I refer to....
All sensors are reading consistantly.

If all 4 sensors rise from 0 correctly i really cant see what the problem is here.

I think you really need to get another module on there and see what happens.

Give A8 Parts a shout. The same module is used in the A8's and they have the pump part listed on ebay for £100 but not the ECU. Might have one kicking around?

Aye, getting the ECU collected tomorrow. (A) variations of these modules are like hens teeth!
