Basic audio question

On the rear deck speakers of my 97 A4, the speakers seem to be assymetrical. The left hand (If looking into the trunk) speaker has a metal case around it, labeled "2X20". Is it an amp? At first, it looked like a small subwoofer. The right hand speaker seems to be a normal speaker. Now, I'm wanting to replace the speakers in the car, and I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. Perhaps some insight?
 
That 2x20w is an amp that powers both of the rear speakers.
 
The Head unit does not have an internal amp for the rear speakers, so if you replace the rears you need to either replace the HU with an aftermarket unit, or install a decent amp to drive the rears.
Another consideration is the strange shape of the speaker apertures in the rear deck. You can't just fir any 6.5" speaker. You either need a custom fit unit or adapter rings, like these:
