    ko4-15, some thoughts and questions!

    Hi,
I know that this is an old subject but as I bought the ko4 turbo from someone on here I thought I would post some thoughts. This was bought in the middle of last year (someone from Wales I think) for my Passat (hope you dont mind me being on here but this site is more performance oriented than the Passat site). Its taken this long as I was a little nave about what I needed-I already had custom code stage 1 and no other mods and thought I could add this and then other bits later. However after having it fitted, no one wanted to map it until I had a FMIC, exhaust and sports cat. I was supposed to be spending all my money on the house and I also had another son born last year so funds were short.

Anyway its all together now with CC stage 2(APU engine) and the above bits. The increase is great, a similar improvement from the original map, but with loads of power now at the top of the revs which was always a disappointment on the stage 1. It would be real fast at low revs then feel rubbish as you got out on the dual carriage ways. Now it keeps the same power all revs and all gears. I took my mate out in it and he had been in it standard and stage 1 and now his main surprise was when I put my foot down and he couldnt believe we were in 5th gear. It is slightly less fun at low revs as it comes in later and you are sometimes going too fast for the small roads before the boost properly kicks in but this is only miner and it does wheel spin slightly less now. I am surprised its like this as when it was mapped I was told that its basically a ko3S in disguise, is it really only that big?

I was so chuffed at having it ready for Santa Pod this weekend but unfortunately it is now slipping the clutch. How long will a slipping clutch last for? As I cant really spend any more on it at the moment. I will still be going to Pod tho. When I get the clutch done I would maybe like to go to a 6 speed as well, seeing that some of the gears are hard to select in the cold. Does any one have any suggestions on places that could do this preferably in the south midlands/south west area, I dont think my skills of hitting things with a hammer and poking them with a blunt screw driver will be enough. A lot of the specialists seem to only provide new bits off the shelf, not like the old days where you got garages to fit all sorts of old bits to your Golfs!
Anyway, I think thats enough to read for now, see you on Sunday.

how long the clutch will last really depends on how worn it is, if it only ever slips when your giving it full bore, then assuming your gentle with it then it should last quite a bit longer yet. If its at the point of slipping just driving noramlly then its probably going to die pretty quickly.

only on full blast really, but i guess trying to 1/4 mile it would be a bad idea.

I think you bought Marks old K04 for a bargain I think. Anyways getting back to the car the clutch as stated will have to be motherd if your not going to replace it straight away and it's only going to get worse meaning new clutch and flywheel.

Now there is a K04 write-up up top which would have helped you to create the best set-up for the K04 because it sound like you did not add injectors to the list of upgrades to max out the turbo but hay sounds like you got a good remap for the set-up you have.

Gearbox wise I think you may have a few option and they may be a straight swap but I'm sure someone will chip in on this.

From what i gather the trickyest part of the tranny swap is the subframe itself.

The 6 Speed uses a V6 style subframe, which has donut mounts on both sides, the 1.8T only has a donut mount on one side, and a D shaped thing on the other. You will need to either fit a V6 subframe or use the existing subframe but weld a suitable mounting point onto it for the donut mount.

The rest of the install is just gathering the required parts, and installing them. I seem to recall the front driveshafts being different, and you need the 6 speed linkage too.

One other thing to note: When your clutch starts slipping, quite often the extra heat generated will kill the flywheel too. If you catch it early you might be ok, but if its high mileage or been slipping for a while its likely the flywheel will be shot. If your changing the fly, i'd be fitting a 240mm solid item, and an S4 clutch, instead of messing with uprated clutches on the stadnard flywheel.

Welcome, and it does sound like my old turbo, you had a bargain there.

The tuner should be able to chanhe the way that the power is delivered, especially on a later ME7 type ecu etc. My tuner certainly has, and i have an old chipable style ECU.

I have a hybrid type turbo on mine now and the power delivery is such i more or less "had" to fit traction control to allow the car to acctually accelerate at all, other wise roundabouts and junctions were having to be taken at very slow speeds

Aragorn is right with the 6 speed thing, if i were to do it again i would swap out the subframe for a V6 one to save me welding mine up

I have a K04 on my A4 but am yet to get it mapped but i will be fitting larger injectors at the same time to take the turbo to its max capability not sure which ones i need though i recall it being TT injectors. Does anyone know the flow rate?
