Hi I'm gonna attempt the timing belt on my a4 avant 1.9tdi ahu engine. please could someone advise what tools are required and any tips.

your beter off buying a timing belt locking kit ,not hard to do ,just time consuming getting to the belts ,tip is get someone who knows what to do to do it ,

Gonna use this forum and a well known repair manual to attempt it.
We will have a running engine at the end of it or a few bent bits.

It was a leap of faith when I did the cambelt on my 1.8t, when you've got the front panel off and are faced with a mess of bits and pieces it looks worse than it is.
I would assume that the layout is similar-ish to petrol cars, the sticky which refers to "service mode" is well worth a read, there are some good photos to aid disassembly.
