OK my brilliant money saving fix didn't last long. The brushes seem to be disintegrating on the blower motor. I can clean them up and it'll work for a week, but ultimately fail again leaving me without aircon. Both Audi & VW say there are no serviceable parts on the unit and are asking £262.70 for a new fan unit.
I can get one from "Audi 4 U" for £170 (apparently OEM part).
But all I need are 2 tuppenny hapenny brushes.
I've tried breakers yards but there's no guarantee that the fan will be any better.
A guy on tyresmoke replaced his with ones from a washing machine motor so I might give that a go.
Any bright ideas?

I finally had to bite the bullet and replace the whole motor (£175 +VAT for OEM part from Audi 4 U). £85 cheaper than from VW or Audi.
I tried replacing the brushes with some similar ones from an alternator, but even with accurate filing it made the motor really noisy, and restricted the current to the motor. It seems to pull some hefty amps with the cc on Lo.
Absolutely ridiculous situation, damn French Valeo b*stards. They still make the ****** things so why can't you get the parts?
