I hate to tell you this, but you do not have a clutch fitted to either car. Was that what you were told by a garage?

perhaps the torque converter has gone? as thats what acts as a clutch in an auto...

As to transplanting the entire engine, yes its possible, but it certainly wont be plug and play. If your lucky you might be able to utilise the torque converter from the older car with the newer gearbox, and then break the older car for parts...

Torque converter is not compatible between the 4 and 6 cylinder car.

Transmission aren't either. Even the auto tranny of a '98 2,5 TDI is not compatible with a '00 2,5 TDI, as the ECU's that control them are completely different.

The connectors that go onto the transmission are different too.
