PM me details of your car - registration number, and specific parts, and I'll give you a price.

Bear in mind that the Meyle kits are 300 for all 8 arms, C links and track rod ends plus all new fixing bolts...

And if the bottom ones have gone, the tops will likely be not too far behind.

Its a lot of hassle to strip it all down, just to have to rip it all apart again to change the top ones a few months later!

I replaced all of mine in one go, tightened the car up nicely too. Just a pity that the arms i used were ****e!

well if a garage is going to do it, MAKE SURE they use either OE Audi arms, or Meyle ones. If you fit generic crap, they WILL fail.

Mine lasted all of 3 months before starting creaking, and it looks like the balljoints have so much play in them already (5 months) that its just wrecked both my front tyres.

the arms were 30 odd plus vat so im guessing there generic ones.

to be fair, how many miles have you done aragon?

i cover about 5k a year. so they should last that long

My cheapy ebay kit lasted all of 2 weeks before it started creaking.
How many miles could you possibly do in 3 months!!!! Even 3k miles per month is only 9k miles and they should last a lot longer than that.

probably covered 3-4000miles in that time before i noticed the creaking, and they started knocking not much longer after that...

Really is a false economy tbh, even with doing the work myself. I'm still going to have to shell out for another set of arms, and replace the tyres they destroyed. By the time you've added in the labour costs, you'd really have to be mad to fit cheapies.

well genuine audi arms cost more than double, so. seen as im selling it, as every single thing i do to it is a pain in the arse, im not that botherd, if it starts creaking ill do it myself with proper ones, im looking at either a evo. or something else as part ex as im fed up with anything to do with it.

there's nothing wrong with it, just for the expense its costing i can have a much faster, better handling car.

even a s2 escort saff cos would be better pound for pound.

Hate to say it mate, but that price is very optimistic.

Even late facelift V6's arent selling for that much, and saught after models like the 1.8TQS are selling for under 3k these days.

Good luck with the sale though!

ive alter'd it a bit, i know its optomistic.
i had it value'd by a dealer and its depressing, but hopefully the fact its a manual avant in white and a v6 its not a average one, that couple'd with fsh and the milage will help i hope.

but i am open to offers as i know what its worth really, shame i cant pull the brakes and exhaust off it, actually thinking about it

how much would my exhaust be worth? 2nd hand about 5k on it
wanna see if its worth sticking a std one on.
and poss the brakes too for that matter.

Unfortunately I very much doubt you'll get anywhere near 2.5k for it.
There are much better spec'd Avants out there for around 1500.
Thus its probably worth more in bits I'm afraid.

yeh 2.5k is very optomistic. as said there is better motors out there for less.

i would get feck all for mine too and i have spent over 2k on my car. if i decide to get rid of it, its either being torched ot sold as parts!

1500 tops is all there worth!

what happened to the value why has it fell throu the floor, i thought with the new tax band, coming in on newer big engine'd cars, the older big engine cars on the old tax band would be more sought after....

anyway, new arms have helped a fair bit, front end feels more planted and there is less body roll from the front

Fuel/Living costs basically. People arent buying cars new any more, dealers aren't wanting big engined cars on their forecourts as they cant shift them, so people are hanging onto them or selling them off cheaper. This effects what the newer cars are worth, and that has a knock on effect down the line. I've seen new (ie 58 plate) vauxhall vectra sri's on sale for 8 grand. 3 grand will get you a petrol B6, or a late B5 TDi, just take a look on autotrader. The best money B5's atm are facelift 1.8T's because they are pretty economical and still have the power. V6's have a marked reduction in fuel economy with little or no increase in power over the turbo.

The tax hikes will likely affect the late model 2001 cars more tbh, as someone who was maybe going to buy a 2002 or 2003 car might go back to a 2001 to beat the tax. To most normal non-enthusiasts, a 1997 car is "old" which is why they'll go out and buy something under 5 years old and end up with a crappy little hatch. So they might go back to a 2001 car to beat the tax, but its unlikely they'd go back to a 97 car.

When we baught our car, we paid 1200 for it, back in Janurary, its a 96 1.8T and has lots of miles, but we sold our old 2001 fiesta for 1300 just after buying it. Some people did ask "why did you change your 2001 car for an old '96 car" but it IS a much better car. Having been a passenger in a 55plate fiesta, i know i'd rather have a '96 B5 over that any day, was just nasty. But thats not how the majority of the population think, they just see its an "old P reg" and that must mean its crap.

A friend asked my brother recently how his S4 looked so shiney and good condition for an "old R reg car" They really couldnt understand how/why he paid 5 grand for a 1998 car with 80k on the clock, when they're much newer 1.4 clio with 40k cost less. I know which i'd rather be driving though!

    A4 Quattro :D

Your brakes probably arent worth all that much imo. If they were 312mm upgrades or something then they might be, but as they're stock size i'd say maybe 50? (i just installed some 312mm brakes to ours and it cost about 130 all in, 50 for the carriers, 70 for a pair of disks and 15 for a set of mintex pads)

Exhaust will be worth a bit, maybe 150-200quid or something?

thanks for the honest replies. i did try to make my brakes bigger but got no where so put stock size on.

if she doesnt sell, its no major issue, i went from a 194bhp s13 to the audi so fueling her isnt a problem

if she doesnt sell, ill keep her get another year's use out of her. there is nothing wrong with her, just i wanted something quicker.

true, V8's are similar money to a 1.8T and make 300hp right out the box.

Just to give you an idea of very recent purchase and sale..... my 2000 2.8Q (with 75K miles) was bought for less than 2K in August and traded for near as dam the same amount in October. I paid half for what the dealer was trying to sell the 2.8Q at.

would be great, i have trouble enuff atm trying to put whatever power i have now down throu the front wheels i dont think 300bhp will help.

fun for a while but not useable.

    is my engine that untunable?

    is your car a sport?

if not a sport front arb will likely help somewhat (FWD's dont have arb;s on the rear)

and similarly if its not a sport the suspension will likely be wanting an upgrade. Some eibach springs and a set of bilstein dampers from our friend Siena will go down a treat.

And theres plenty of people on here running 200-240hp turbo FWD's and i suspect the power delivery of the V8 will make its 300hp just as drivable as one of those, if not better.

non sports have thinner front arb's than the sport models, and soggy dampers and springs, they also have a higher ride height which will also induce more roll.

Sport model front ARB is the same as that fitted to the S4 and RS4, so imo probably a worthwhile upgrade, and likely available cheap.

No fwd A4's came with rear ARB's, some companies do kits, but i suspect the money would be better spend on springs/shocks. Try n find a pair of sport front seats too, much more supportive for the enthusiastic moments!

    sorry

I dont care what any one says i would never put second hand brake parts on a car. Two dangerous you never know what damage has been done when they where removed.

At best there worth scrap price.

Brakes its never false economy to buy used parts.

    As for prices

Well used audis cant be given away. mines fairly priced and been in the trader for 3 weeks now. the only people interested is the odd dealer who wants to offer stupid money for a car thats easily worth 2K in my book and is under valued at that.

Cars just aint selling at the moment.

Any item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. At the moment, they're worth bugger all, because as you say, they aint selling.

The problem is that its not just affecting you trying to sell your car, its happening throughout the market, from new motors to 300 bangers which means that newer, better cars are selling cheaper by people who need to shift them (ie dealers or people who like that shiney new numberplate, or fleet purchasers etc) regardless of the loss, and if new cars sell for less the old ones become worth less.

I dont know the particulars of your car, but 2k is a LOT of money for a B5, and the ONLY cars that are worth that are late model TDI's and 1.8TQS'. You'll struggle to get 2k for anything else imo, and its not going to suddenly improve, they will just keep dropping, as they're always getting older.

As for the brake parts, i can see what your saying. I've always replaced disks and pads when upgrading, but i've seen plenty of people buy and fit used RS4 parts to their car, mainly because new disks are something like 450 for a pair
