Hi Guys need some help, have just changed the air con-belt and switched on aircon which ran ok for a coulpe of minutes............and then

High pitch squeal from compressor
shortly followed white smoke from new belt which then
started to disintegrate

Pulled it apart and checked pulleys etc all seemed ok. Ran engine without belt and all ok. Then ran engine with belt again without aircon on and all fine.

Checked elsawin no help, any ideas or is the compressor jst broked :sos:

1998 1.8ts - AEB Engine.

Compressor pistons / rings have broken up / jammed.

The compressor core then seizes, the clutch tries to drive it, it locks up the rotor, the belt begins to over heat, and melts.

I've come accross a similar scenario in an A-class Mercedes, but in this case, the compressor was oily, and caught fire. Luckily, it was quickly put out.

So yes, you need a new compressor - let me know if you need a quote.

i got a spare compressor mate in working order. just needs a clutch. the unit its self works tho.
£20 its yours!

At £20, dirt cheap.

Only issue is PAG oil - PAG oil absorbs moisture, and a compressor that's been disconnected from a system, and not pressure sealed won't last very long.

PAG oil protects the piston rings, it's added when the system's being re-gassed.

£20 is very cheap... but i need it gone as it will just sit in my shed for years! lol

Thanks chaps, new you would come up with answer , but not what I wanted to here :( never mind.

Makes sense though, since car has been stood for 9 month.

Is this an easy job to swop over or should I let Air con chappie do it.Never done air-con before and not sure about the gas and oil stuff. :uhm:

Advice welcome, and thanks for offers of parts , once I have decided what to do I will be in touch:beerchug:

If the system's still charged, I'd let a qualified refrigerant specialist recover the R134-A and PAG oil, before removal and replacement.
