8J rims...what tyres you running?

bought some rims and the guy was running 255/30 profile tyres (18" BTW)
this seems overly wide on a rim that is at best about 235mm from outer to outer edge.

anyone running 8.5" rims? what tyres do you use?
I was looking at 245/40 F1 assymetricos, but am worried they may not protect the rim edge if i get the wrong profile

Sorry bolloxed up teh first post, thought they were 8J they are 8.5J

the 18x8j rims fitted to the A8 as standard have 245/45 tyres fitted so thats likely in the ballpark for the correct width...

the stock A4 16x7J alloys use 205/55's and the 17x7.5J rims on the 1.8TQS and S4 use 225/45 iirc so 245/40 would probably be about spot on i'd imagine for an 8J rim, although the rolling radius is then out by ~5% (25.7" diameter for 245/40 vs 24.8" diameter for 205/55)

really, they not a bit stretched?
I put my 225/40's on and the side walls were pointing in to the tread, no rim cover at all

just checked, as post now reads they are 8.5" not 8"

my current are 8J with 225/40 no problem.
figured 15mm is about 1/2 an inch but now I am even more confused

why you confused?

you have 225 tyres on a 8" rim
you've upgraded to an 8.5" rim and hence need wider tyres...

245/40 is probably about right, you might get away with a 235, but i know i'd be getting the wider tyre, especially on such a low profile.

I was told to get 255/35
that is a full 30mm wider, wheel is only 15mm wider

i have since seen that 245/40 will be too tall ans feck up my speedo massively
if anything I think 245/35 is the way forward but i can;t find anyone that runs 8.5J

i really don;t want to spend £600 on 255/35 tyres and find they slop around like my old ones did when I had 235's on my 8J

just want to get it right and half teh tyre people seem to know less than me

lol i really doubt a 35 profile tyre is going to flop around at all

also its not massively too tall going 245/40, its a 3.32% difference according to this site: http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html when compared with the stock 205/55r16 tyres.

which means when your speedo is registering 70mph, you will be doing 72.3mph (well, when your doing an indicated 70 your actually only doing about 63 anyway, so you'll be doing ~65 instead)

yeah, its not so much the difference in speed, don't pay too much attention to that dial anyway!

its the 10mm difference in tyre height, I don;t have much room between the bearing carrier upright and the inner top edge of the tyre.
5mm on one side is quite close i think

wont that be dependent on the offset anyway?

ie you may have to lower the offset anyway (ie use spacers) to get the wider rim to clear the bearing carrier...

well your new wheels are wider so if you keep the offset the same its going to stick further out and further in by 12.7mm...

have pulled the arches by 20mm.
offset is wider by 19mm
tyres are now wider by 20 also going for 245's

just had a butchers at the brakes going on........OMG....I am very excited
