I've got a pretty tasty Sony Xplod MD head unit in my car that controls the sony CD changer in the boot. I know that if do go back to a stock head unit I can get an adapter for the Sony changer but which head unit is best? Are there some types of head unit's that won't fit? I was thinking of going back to stock just to make the dash look original. Just curious.

Nothing will look original but you could go for a similar illuminated unit with usb/ipod connectivity. Let me know which one if any you are interested and i will see what i can do for you

Will not be able to adapt a unit from a b5.5 to work in my dashboard? The Sony isn;t bad as it's mostly red lit. I just don't use the Mini Disc much anymore...

i gotta Alpine head unit with color changing back lights. (so it will match the dash) its got a MD EQ, mp3/wma/dvd and a changer in the boot.

ill never use anything but Alpine, IMO they have the best sound qual of any other head unit. 60watt out dolby pro-logic and dts! Alpine provide AI-NET system which allows you to add what you want to your system just like ya seperates at home. it aint cheap but well worth it!

I think, unless I can find a facelift (or 15yr old) cd player that will connect to my Sony changer then I'll just keep my MD head unit. Would be nice to have the display on the dashboard linked to the stereo tho, you know for the radio station and stuff?

can u not get a plug in box for your sony head unit to display the info to your dash??

once again i know Alpine do these, so i would assume sony do to??

failing that i think me mate had a Audi Concert head unit with a dodgy volume switch he mite sell!

EDIT: i found this for a vauxhall so there must be 1 for our cars..

No after markety HU i am aware of will intergrate with the DIS. For OEM look go for a Becker as they are as close as you will get with fantastic sound, better than most main line HU's with quoted million watts outputs etc.
The Becker out put will be quoted as RMS and not MAX, and the sound will be clear and smooth. As for operating the SOny changer, you are stuck with an adapter for the OEM one, or a Sony HU

ive got the standard double din symphony stereo in my facelift and have the adapter to allow me to use a sony explode multi changer in the boot

and it is for this reason i stick with Alpine.. real figures, real sound, no f*ckin about.

lol i should be a Alpine salesman!! i love it!

Blaupunkt is the only HU at the moment that will link with the Audi DIS (£70 for the cable though). Total waste of time, why on earth would you want that feature let alone compromise your choice of HU because of it? Most HU's have a display on the front not 10 inches away from the DIS.

Alpine figures are MAX mate, 60 W MAX is prob at best 20w per channel RMS, the sound on an alpine is clear and crisp generally some find it too clinical and some like it, at the end of the day its up to what "you " want. Form over function, etc etc.

I have spent years palying with so many different makes of HU, before i finnaly settled on the one i have. Take your time and be sure as its costly otherwise.

On our A3 we bought a Dension Ice link and play MP3's from a cheapy 4 gb Ipod mini thing, works like a changer and hides in the glove box. It gives MP3 capability and leaves the dash OEM looking

The audis are bad for ipods , so hard to search for tracks on bigger pods with basic operations. Loose the changer and go for full speed ipod headunit that looks nice like Alpine CDA-9887R with kce422i , match the colour to your dash and lock away your ipod in glove box and enjoy

yes i aggree, lower end Unit like the ones found in halfords yes... but the higher end units (the ones you buy from Alpine specialists) are R.M.S.
