Engine out for a turbo change. Think the book time is 11 hours, but an experienced spanner should be able to pull it within a few hours. Certainly not an easy job though unless you are familiar with the B5.

When you're doing the cambelt you also want to replace the water pump and thermostat at the same time. Can cost an arm an a leg if you're paying someone to do it.

cheers for that bud, sounds a bit like the 300zx then, so really i need a car that has already had this done, im sick of the maintenece of my zed, its just not fun anymore, ive spent thousands in the last year or so just keeping it on the road, im sure an s4 is a lot more realiable and and there a lot more people out there that can work on them, i can do most things myself but it would be nice for a change to not to have to do it lol

how would you compare an s4 to other cars in its category, or even against something like an imprezza and so on, i quite like my fast cars, and my zed is seriousely quick, but its sickened me so im after a bit more finess aswell

just trying to get the knowhow on these motors as i aint been in one and dont know much about them

where are you based? there are some good specialists up and the country.

the S can be expensive as well - Scott will vouch for that. I paid just over a grand for Forge DV's, CV boot, pads and discs all round including a caliper and full cambelt kit when I bought mine, if you have one with problems *touch wood* it can get expensive.

As Frazered says (I'm Scott by the way), S4's aren't always reliable. I've spent 5 figures trying to keep mine on the road and i've not had it two years.

On the plus side, mine has K04's and on the odd occasion it has been running well there's not been anything that can keep up with it in a straight line.

A friend of mine sells performance cars (Porsches, Maseratis, etc.) and he said it's the fastest thing he's ever driven.

Just a shame it's almost permanently got a new problem to fix. You only have to see my signature to see how reliable it has been for me! I've got an Audi S/RS rolling road day on Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised if mine goes pop!

I'm looking into an S4 with a RS4 or even RS6 turbos. I do all my own work. Engine out for me is a fun weekend, so not too bad there.

Can you highlight some common issues with these cars. I know about the rattling exhaust manifolds so I'd fit later ones ceramic coated or a set from AWE etc.

    Thanks.

The S4 is like any other performance car, you get good and bad ones.
Coming from the world of evo's i was used to things needing repairing / servicing on a daily basis, but so far other than the usuall temp sensors and airbag warnings, my S4's been fine.
In terms of perfomance, a std S4 will keep with your average evo / scooby on an open road, the mountains of torque you get from the V6 see to that.
But on the twistys it's a different story, not to say the S4 can't corner at speed, but you'll notice the weight of the car over something jap.

That one has been owned by a couple of enthusiasts in it's history, the last one (I assume before the current seller) was into detailing, so imagine the paintwork will be spotless.

PM 'S4Woody' on www.AudiSRS.com for a more detailed history of it.

    Noticed his infamous 'bonnet slot'!
