hi chaps, have found wet carpet in the drivers footwell. anyone got anyideas where its coming from, battery housing area is bone dry

Have you looked underneath the battery? There are 2 drains, one underneath the battery and one behind the brake servo further along.
The drain holes get blocked so easily as they have a ridiculously shaped rubber grommet that can get blocked even by silt let alone leaves & similar debris. Chances are the carpets have been wet for some time, so the battery area will have drained eventually overtime. It's a serious design flaw, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't this that is causing the leak.
