Despite the general opinion being that air con is a must. I disagree
I own a A4 1.8t Sport year '96 it has everything but Air con. I bought it in winter so at the time I wasn't really thinking about air con. Also, having just returned from a year in australia I didnt think i would need it anyway even in the summer. Well we have had a few hot days and I still havent regretted getting a car without aircon. I have an electric sunroof and windows and its nice to have a breeze coming in overhead as a pose to getting in someone elses car and being made to shut all the windows so the aircon works, then getting slightly irratated eyes and throat from breating treated air in.
The main car problem I hear people go on about in my office is their aircon. 3 of my colleagues have had problems with theirs in the past month, 1 in a ford, 1 in a nissan and one in volvo, and there is only 4 people in our office!
The main fact though is the weight of the aircon system. I have just been reading an article in an old Top Gear mag on the BMW M3 CSL. It was saying that the weight of the aircon system is the equivelant to an average adult passenger! Many buyers were taking the no aircon option as not to affect the weight/performance of the beast. I'm not sure if the audi aircon system would weigh the same but it can't be far off so I'd say my car will definatly have weight/performance benefits over the same car with aircon (the car with aircon effectively having an extra adult passenger inside all the time).
So, Aircon? the one positive I can see as apose to all the negatives i have listed is that you can keep cool for about the 3 days of the year in this country that would warrant its use. And even thats debatable if you prefer the taste of fresh air.
