Despite the general opinion being that air con is a must. I disagree

I own a A4 1.8t Sport year '96 it has everything but Air con. I bought it in winter so at the time I wasn't really thinking about air con. Also, having just returned from a year in australia I didnt think i would need it anyway even in the summer. Well we have had a few hot days and I still havent regretted getting a car without aircon. I have an electric sunroof and windows and its nice to have a breeze coming in overhead as a pose to getting in someone elses car and being made to shut all the windows so the aircon works, then getting slightly irratated eyes and throat from breating treated air in.

The main car problem I hear people go on about in my office is their aircon. 3 of my colleagues have had problems with theirs in the past month, 1 in a ford, 1 in a nissan and one in volvo, and there is only 4 people in our office!

The main fact though is the weight of the aircon system. I have just been reading an article in an old Top Gear mag on the BMW M3 CSL. It was saying that the weight of the aircon system is the equivelant to an average adult passenger! Many buyers were taking the no aircon option as not to affect the weight/performance of the beast. I'm not sure if the audi aircon system would weigh the same but it can't be far off so I'd say my car will definatly have weight/performance benefits over the same car with aircon (the car with aircon effectively having an extra adult passenger inside all the time).

So, Aircon? the one positive I can see as apose to all the negatives i have listed is that you can keep cool for about the 3 days of the year in this country that would warrant its use. And even thats debatable if you prefer the taste of fresh air.

I've just bought a A4 with aircon and it is well good! It is brilliant for cooling your car down, but I only would use it when it's actually hot! Also the benefit of aircon on an A4 is you have climate control so I just set 1 temp and that is it, the system does the rest. One thing though, it smells a little of sour milk when you switch it on first, how much does it cost to clean?!

Hey Jimminy, you obviously don't have leather (even though you state the car has all the options). AirCon is a must especially if you use your car for work, or drive in rush hour. And what's all that nonsense about a breeze? Unless you only drive along the coastline and never get stuck in a traffic jam.
I would never buy a car without it.
An aircon system weighing 70kg's? I don't think so.
Next you'll be recommending the Atkins diet as a performance enhancement.
Personally I always have a poo before getting in my car to increase my mpg.

I have my climate control on the whole time. No noise, no dirt & dust, no pollution. Just clean, cool air. If you're worried about mpg, then sell your Audi & buy a Daewoo.

No climate? No ****** thanks!

I'm a poor student! I only fill up £10 at a time!!!!! Has anyone noticed that they get a fair few less miles now that the petrol prices have gone up?! I thought it was becuase I had my sour milk on, but obviously not now!!! It will cost £90 to get regassed and cleaner or £125 to get regassed and properly cleaned!!! All prices annoying exclude VAT!

I just tried aa servicing and a local big garage! Must be trying to rip me off as usual!! Thet tried charging me £130 for a shoch fitted when kwiksh1t will do it for £80! Do you know where you can get the spray? I've tried good old ebay!! I don't even know whether it needs regassing, just my mate's ibiza cupra r is a lot colder!!!

Oh yeah and as a serious reply to jiminniey2k's post, I think aircon comes into its own when it is a hot day and you are on the motorway.

Top tip if you haven't got aircon.
On a really hot day, stuck in traffic, just close all your windows and people will think you've got it!

And then you can shout & shake you head so people will think you're listening to the stereo that you haven't got, because some bozo specified a delete option to save a bit of weight to improve the mpg.

i think pounding on the door every so often will work even better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

and of course what we are all forgetting is the 14yr old fake gold and burberry sti ridden 'bird' sat next to you to polish it all off!!

I just had mine serviced & re-gassed. It cost £100 (London prices). It only had about 500 grams of gas in it, it should have over 700. It's been much better since, cos the compressor doesn't have to work quite so hard to circulate the refrigerant. Well worth the money, ahead of the great British summer.

A tip. Don't take it to an Audi centre. They charge a fortune & din't really know what they're doing with climate. Do some web research & you'll soon find a local specialist. If I can find the link to the website I used, I'll send it to you.

Call me a sad [censored] but I've just checked with a precision thermometer!!! Will an outside temp of 15.5c and recirc on LO it went down to 9c. Do ya reckon this is right?!

It probably should be less than 9. The aircon in my A4 was a bit better than the S3s I reckon. It may well be worth getting it re-gassed. You don't want to end up with a bill for a compressor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

They should pressure check it and check the temperature. The guy can also block off the front so the condensor can't work so well, simulating a hot day.

A local aircon specialist took about £70 to re-gas after fitting a new compressor to our Corsa.

Yeah I shall take it to the AA garage in halfords. They charge £75 to do a pressure check etc and to re gas it. I've been out in it today and it is 20c here and i don't think it was very working cold enough!!!

My aircon doesn't seem very cold at all. I guess I need mine regassed as well.
I've been told that there is a place near me that will do it for £35 which seems too cheap going by the prices that are mentioned here.

Where is "near me"?

Hi all you cool lot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif now you got me thinking if mine is cold enough ? 2001 S4 is there a time or age to get it look at ? Or pay and get it checked & done anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for quick reply will have it look at due service in 3k but that may be after the summer or has it gone /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

No! Don't wait til the end of the summer. Try the Autoclimate website to find a place near you & get it done ASAP. Then you can enjoy what we Brits laughingly call a summer.

Mine is still cool, I only had it for < a year bought from an Audi dealer last Oct as an approved used, do I need to check mine too? Or are there any signs I need to look out for?

Did your car come with a service record? If it did, it should tell you if and when the A/C was serviced last. If there's no evidence of it having been done in the last two year, assume it hasn't been & get the car booked in. Just because it still cools the car, doesn't mean everything is OK.

It really is money well spent.

An aircon system natrually leaks gas at about 15% a year through the rubber hoses. Therefore you should get it serviced once a year or at least every other. I wouldn't bother taking it to Audi, go to a specialist, e.g. autoclimate website.

What I've been told doesn't agree with this. Both a car dealer (non-audi) and an independent specialist have both told me the air-con needs no servicing unless you feel it's not working correctly.

There a lot of people who don't use the air-con, thinking it kills fuel economy. Little do they know not using it kills the compressor. Maybe "services" are being used to try and find these problems. I suspect owners in that category probably wouldn't know if their air-con was working properly or not.

Let me put it this way. It's a fridge. You don't service your Fridge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif
