Re: Air con, Pros and Cons.

Well I was told this by the guy who serviced it and also on other websites I've looked at. If you think about the molecular structue of rubber, it is lots of molecules stranded together in chains. So there are gaps for gas to leak out of. So I would agree with what the guy said.

He says that gas only leaks out of rubber and not metal as the metal does not have gaps. He said that the better the aircon system, the less rubber hoses it would contain. I think a fridge system contains a lot more metal!

I think you are right in saying then that servicing is preventative because if there is less gas then the compressor has to work harder and therefore there is a higher load which would lead to a premature failure (800 for new compressor fitted). However my aircon was still cold but it had less than half the gas in due to natural loss.

He also said that most dealers don't even bother servicing the aircon on normal service schedules, so the chances are it won't have ever been serviced if serviced by your dealer.

I reckon it's well worth servicing it as it could save a lot of money.

Ok, maybe I'm wrong, I'm passing on opinion based on my experience.

In the case of my A4 (4 years old at the time), I had the guy out to look at it because there was a noise, wasn't sure where from. I'm not sure how, but he checked and said it certainly wasn't needing regassed. Compressor was fine also. Turned out (when I saw him about our Corsa's compressor replacement, another story) he had came across what he thought was the same noise, one of the fans. By that time the A4 was sold anyway.

He looked at the A4 for free that time and I asked about servicing. He said use it regularly, so long as it's very cold fine, but call if it get's less than very chilly as it indicates a loss of gas or a compressor problem.

As you point out though, the compressor is working harder when it's warmer, so a drop in gas will means it's working even harder. Maybe he's just trying to sell more compressors later, I don't know.

Presume it can't do any harm having it re-gassed from time to time, but I think it's a bit overkill

Hmmm. Interesting point! I'm not sure what they do on the servicing as far as re-gas. They just put a dye in mine and told me to come back if it got less cold over a few weeks. I suppose on future services they can just look for traces of the dye?

When you have your car 're-gassed' it's usually only topped up. So in effect you cannot overdo it

Another reason for having a regular service is the lubricating oil in with the R134A. A full service will remove the old oil, do an evap of the whole system to remove any moisture (which sits in the pipes and corrodes them) and re-gas.

Oh [censored] me, I really put my neck on the line starting this post. And I was sooo worried that you all may not think I was cool. I would just die if I got a bad rep around this forum, it means THAT much to me what you guys think about me.

"You could just wind your windows up on the motorway and make EVERYONE THINK you have aircon"

Unfortunately thats the real issue here. All you teenagers worrying about what people think of you. Fair enough the guys in America who actually need aircon and I suppose you could justifiably say that you do need it for two - three days a year in this country, but what most of you are worrying about it what your bumchums are thinking about you. They will think your car is better if you can say that you have aircon - thats whats on your minds.

Fock me, from the sound of a lot of you I'd guess that only a couple of people who have written on this post actually own a car. Most of you are probably dreamagers still in school pretending to have an S3. "The guy at the garage told me ... gas escapes through rubber because it has holes in its molecules ... metal has no molecules etc.." that guy certainly hasnt done his f8ckin GCSe's yet.

No, theres something definitely not right here, people talking like they are 16 but purporting to own 10000+ cars - no way!

Go back to your room and look in the Autotrader for a wiggered up Nova. Maybe by the time you are 30, after you have been working at the factory for 15 years you will be able to afford an 1990 Audi 100.

Re: Air con, Pros and Cons.

It's been the 2nd week of sun here in Notts :-) and I'm glad I have climate control. :-) It's not just for the summer, it keeps ur windows from fogging up too when it's cold! So why not?! For your info, I used to own a 95 A4 with no aircon and I liked it full heartedly, but I'm even more glad to have upgraded to a newer one with aircon...

And no I'm not a teenager mate, those days are long gone... but what's age got to do with it even if we were and could afford a 10k+ car?! Hey look who's talking like a 16 year old here... Funny how with foul language and groundless assumptions would you convince any of us that you're even remotely mature... drink some bitter, you might begin to like the taste. Trying to insult others will not get you any respect, not in the grown up world anyway.

I think i'll take the "of F*** off basically" option. I'm not ready to get any older yet so I'll leave all you girl racers to it. To suck eachothers dicks about who's got the best imaginary S3, when really you've got an astra with a gay 'de-badged grill' and a massive exhaust that makes it sound like a 50cc motorbike.

This thread was hijacked a long time ago and became Off-topic. The moderators should have moved it to OT or locked it by now.

I came to this thread to read (and/or help with) the original problem. I found myself reading all this sophomoric hyperbole. Jeeeesh! This thread is worthless.[ QUOTE ]

I'm not sure that's fair. This post started when Jimminie2k put forward a valid question for discussion. The fact that 99& of respondents (self included) disagreed with it suggests he was misguided (i.e. wrong), but the proposition was nonetheless valid, and it prompted a lot of interesting comments, and further points for discussion about the value of air-con and issues around keeping it fully functional. Jimminie2k came back days later, having made no further contribution in the meantime, and immediately took umbrage against all around him, and fired of some pretty intemperate insults. I agree some of us (again self included) may have got carried away in the follow-through, but I'm afraid he brought in on himself & he deserved what he got.
