so last night i get in my car to go home.
the headlights had been working perfectly previously in the night.
but i got in and turned the light lever all the way up and the head lights didnt come on.
the parking lights where on but no head lights.
but my high beam still worked.
but only when i held the lever myself.
not when i depressed it to the back to keep it on without having to hold it.
so today i popped the hood and the bulbs look fine, not burnt out or broken or anything.
any ideas what it could be?
im kind of low and cash and dont wanna shell out another $50 for bulbs but i think im gonna have to.
please help!

Did you have the keys in the ignition? The lights won't turn on unless you have the keys in the ignition.

yeah the engine was running.
coudl it be the wiring perhaps??

If the headlights are "on" can you turn on the fogs(front and/or rear)?

when the headlights are on the on position i cant turn the fog lights on either.

to the guy who said go for xenons, i def. would like to but im low on cash.
if i had the money ide just go all out and change it all.

also im pretty sure its the h7s, not positive, its a 1996 a4 2.8 2WD if that helps.

I had the same prublem in my 1989 Audi 80.

I had upgraded the headlight bulbs to 100 Watt dip and 130 Watt main. Worked fine for about 6 months and then failed.

The problem was down to the new bulbs drawing too much current and it burnt out the connector on the headlight switch. Removed the steering cowling and soldered the wire directly onto the switch. Worked fine until i sold the car.

Could be you have the same problem? I trust you have checked the fuses /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Regards,

Jim.
