Are you referring to the shifter? Does the shifter feel (in your hand) loose as you shift?

It sounds like a synchro problem with 4th.

See if it acts differently when shifting into 4th slowly or hard and whether it happens with high rpm shifts or low rpm shifts.

i was doing some testing last night, its mainly at high end of 3rd, getting ready to roost, then changing to 4th. It makes a clunk\ stripping sound , but changes fine.

Yep, your synchros allow for the smooth transition between gears as you shift. The job of the synchros is to match engine speed and drive shaft speed so that the gears can mesh.

Over time, a bad synchro will fail and you will have extreme difficulty shifting or you won't be able to shift into the gear in question at all.

    LOL

    should i sell it now?

my brother clocked up the mileage, its last service was 800 which included lots of suspension work (knocking at the front)

Re: 4th gear - feels well loose somtimes

Selling at this point is probably up to your sense of nostalgia or loyalty to the car. It sounds like you may not have as much an attachment to the car since your brother put on all the miles. It's up to you - you probably won't get much with such a high mileage, but that may not be as much a factor in your decision as the potential/future repairs that may occur. Maybe keep it until a repair bill comes back that makes it undesirable. Then turn it over to someone else who may want to tinker with it. The loss (difference between now and when the car needs to be repaired) won't be that great since the car is high mileage anyway.

Re: 4th gear - feels well loose somtimes

I'd say the synchro on 4th is on it's way out. It's common on S4's but I've not heard of it on A4's.

If that is the case it'll be cheaper to get a box from a breakers.
