It would help if you stated what car you have, what engine / model.

Right now, all we can do is guess...and guess.....and guess.....

mate recently had a vectra that was overheating and the waterpump had been fitted with a plastic impeller, impeller had basically snapped off the shaft so the pump was doing nothing...

If its similar in design to the AEB though, check the little belt that runs between the waterpump pulley and the PAS pump, as if that went the only sign would be it badly overheating.

I'd be inclined to say waterpump.

As has been said they use a plastic impeller which cracks and spins on the pumps shaft.

Had it on my last A4

This is almost certainly what it is, quite common as well.

Yer, something i never have fitted to an engine and never will (unless it becomes impossible to get metal ones), its quite a recent phenomenon, no doubt done to save about 50p during manufacture. I've found that the better parts suppliers tend to still be fitting proper metal impellers so if you look around you should be able to find a metal bladed replacement. I'd imagine (ok hope) that the genuine audi parts still have metal blades so that might be a last resort if you cant find one elsewhere.
