what is the sensor or whatever it is on the airbox nearest the wing that has a hose coming out of it that goes away into the wing and has a 2 wire plug going into it?are these the same on all petrol 1.8 a4's?

Active Charcoal Canister purge valve?

sounds about right.what exactly does it do?

It vents vapour from the fuel tank, the valve releases these vapours into the intake manifold, and it's burnt.
