What a difference a Cone makes

Well umm'd and ahh'd a bit about fitting a cone filter as I had heard about them killing the MAF (I have now found this is only if they are over oiled) and heat soak from the engine.

I have had a look at the K&N 57i kit's and like the quality so I have bought and installed one.

WOW can really hear the induction and re-circ dump valve flutter/hiss
I am really impressed with the feel it gives the engine and the noise!!!

as far as the heat soak is concerned I think I have that covered.
I have ordered a heat shield/blanket for the turbo I have used the original heat shield and tie wrapped it off the rail and made my self a barrier out of a sheet of alluminium and some silicone hose

    what do you think?

I have done this as a guide, so excuse my cr@p diagram, the dimensions are what I have used but you may have to tweak them as you go, it also needs curving as you install it.
The image is not to scale!

let me know if it helps.

only took 5 minutes to fit the cone. the maf unscrews from the airbox, you then clamp it directly to the intake pipe, there is a bracket in the kit to hold tha MAF in place and the cone filter fastens to the other end.

    yep...

you need to relocate your horn.. (i attached it were the old air box bolted to the wing) then simply ran a induction pipe from the vent to the filter. pipes approx 6" round and it just sits there. dont move rattle or anything.

    hope this helps.

At last, the filter is fitted... love it. Gives off a great sound...not as much of a roar as i expected but a nice turbo noise and a bit a whistle too. All good!

I have made up a heat shield which so far seems to work quite well. if it helps I can post you a cardboard template?
I have put the dimensions on this post, if your really stuck I can see if I can get some more alluminim and make one up

right.... its all on and yes it works a treat! modified my sheild slightly to diagram but that diagram deffo made it alot easyer to construct.

    heres some pics..

1 manky piece of ali out the father in laws shed....

1 printed out diagram from mr G60

Piece of ali after a bit of cutting..

birds eye view of cutting so far..(and 1 beer gut in the way)

other side of the ali covered in paint, what a lovley job to remove it all!!

all edges curved off and made safe to touch...

brushed ali effect after some elbow grease..

on the car, drilled 1 hole, threaded it, and attached it with a butterfly bolt so it is easly removed again. other nut on rear on bulk head.

    from another angle...

i found this easy to do, (altho time consuming) many thanks to g60leigh for the diagram!

what we think of my attemt then?

tell ya what people.... all you that have an after market air filter that is not protected from a heat sheild, make 1 of these!!! the noticable difference is amazing!! since i have fitted this, my fuel economy has gone up, my performance is there all the time, there is no hessitation what so ever through the rev range. since fitting this tiny peice of ali to my car it feels so much different. i have been away to visit family this weekend so have done alot of miles, and sat in alot of traffic!

best mod i have done with out a doubt!

I'd be interested in seeing some vagcom readings of the Intake Temp with and without the shield fitted. Do you have Vagcom and a lead?

I've always been skeptical about the whole idea of a heatshield and "CAI" kits as when your driving along its not as though the engine bay is sealed off, theres air flowing through it at road speed, and its only really while stationary that you tend to get heatsoak. Even then i'd be more worried about heatsoaking the intercooler than the air flowing into the turbo as thats where most of the cooling happens anyway...

If you could pull some readings with and without it that would be excellent.

I also made myself a heat shield over the weekend thanks to the very handy diagram, tweaked it slightly but here is my attempt:

only slight problem is when i put my foot down now it makes a loud sucking noise but isn't very responsive, any ideas? should i just ditch it and go back to airbox?

not enough air i would say mate. i had the same problem. simply re-locate the horns and run an induction pipe. worked a treat for me!

Edit: also that little sensor thing that sits on top of the air box (with a little heat sink on it) that needs to be keeped cool so i have been told as it will effect your performance. sorry im not clued up enough on the reson why i just know it should be keeped cool.

the metal thing is the ignition amplifier, it emits quite a bit of heat hence requiring cooled.

I cant imagine its "not enough air" as its not as though the heatshield is completely sealed and the original inlet duct is still fitted which can supply enough air for tuned engines just fine.

ok thanks for the advice, will try run a pipe up to it for some more cold air and see if that helps.

Alpinehead do you still have the intake pipe from the grill, if so can I have it if you don't want it?
