i've got the 60/40 split folding rear seat in my 98 saloon - would a 60/40 rear seat from an avant fit? seen an interior on ebay that looks like it might go for a reasonable price but it's avant (always the case). the rear seats in the pic do look similar to mine, though.

Yes they'll fit, but you'll have to get a bracket made up to hold them in the 'closed' position. Also the side bolsters will have a little gap behind the top of them as well.

there's a turbo sport saloon interior on there but it has a fixed rear seat - why can't i get a decent sporty saloon interior with airbags and split rear seat? i'm fed up with hanging onto the steering wheel for dear life every time i go round a bend. grrr...

There is a nice RS4 Recaro interior for sale on eBay at the moment.
That's what I have fitted into my 98 saloon. Can't beat them!
Any metal fabricator will be able to make the bracket up for a few quid.
For a while(>year!), I was driving round with the rear uprights held in place with zipties. Or when I needed to fold the seats down and didn't have time to faff around putting the zipties back together, I used to just pull the seatbelts across the seats.
