    Under 20mpg

Just worked out my mpg and its not good, I am getting just under 20 in my 2000 1.8TQS with 58K on the clock

    I used this site http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.shtml

    Fuel cost 100.16 (pence)
    Total spend 40 (pounds)
    Distance 170 (miles)

    = 19.35mpg

Why do you think I could be getting such low mpg?
My car had no codes in January this year, however a month or so ago the rubber pipe that connects the IC to the IM popped off, not sure why but pretty sure it was due to a loose jubilee clip on the IM, not sure if this could have anything to do with, my local mechanic thinks not but he wants 40 to read codes and I dont fancy parting with 40 right now!

The above figures are based on tesco SUL and mixed town and motorway

Currently doing the same with UL

    Thanks in advance

Mixed town and motorway as mentioned, just normal driving, I only put my foot down now and again its not really possible to drive aggresive.

I should say that it was using around 20-25 a week and now that figure has gone up to 35-40 a wee, thats a huge increase and I cant afford to run it!

Surely someone must have experianced something along these lines?

Something's definitely not right. Mine achieved similar figures recentl. I spent 45 (113p per litre) and only achieved 200 miles. Eventually the fuel filter was diagnosed to be the problem - it wasn't connected properly since the last service. Also the breather fuel pipe got partially disconnected for some strange reason. Anyway having fixed all that I now done just over 120 miles and still have 95mi remaining on the DIS after spending 35. 20 mile round trip a day on dual carriageways. However, I do use cruise control which I think helps.

Nowadays due to high prices of fuel I top my car up to half-way point which gets me further as opposed to topping up to full due to fuel load. A friend I know suggested it, and I thought he was just trying to be funny - but it works. LOL.

Cheers for the info, did vag com bring anything up to point you in the direction of the fuel filter and breather pipe?

But I managed to smell fuel coming through the airvents while the car was stationary with the fan on. That confirms that something was leaking from the engine. Also, when I started the car droplets of fuel could be seen coming out from the fuel filter.

Try starting your car and check for possible droplets of fuel from beneath the car.

Ok ill try that, it has not smelled of fuel recently though and I would of noticed that, thinking of booking it in somewhere now, will be cheaper in the long run as its costing me a fortune to run at the moment

The key thing here is the change in MPG from when I first got it even though my commute has not changed. Its almost doubled how much fuel it uses since I first got it, I am going to book it in as I am sure there is something wrong here, I would get yours looked at too AUDI TURBO, 20mpg if driving normally is just not right

Would be interesting to see if you find anything - i'm averaging 23 - 25 mpg. I do also suffer from "leadrightfooticus" though.
Must stop trying to spin up all 4 wheels, but it's so tempting since fitting the Southbend clutch...

when i baught mine the thermostat was stuck open and it was doing low 20s mpg fixed that and it rose to 30ish

the guage wouldnt reach 90 though so it was obvious there was a problem

for a drop like that its either a leak, or CTS or Lambda is faulty

ours will do 380-400 on a tank now (its currently on 344 and hasnt beeped yet), averaging 31ish mpg. The missus drives it quite mildly though.

I average 28.5 mpg now, thats a drop of 2.5mpg for me but it could be down to the fact I need to service her. And this time I may spend a little more on the spark plugs. Also contemplated selling her last week, with fuel escalating and my avg wage not keeping up Im gonna have to do something, but then again I could do with getting a push bike and doing some exercise lol.

Some helpful info, thanks all, confirms I did the right thing booking it in as I am certain there is something wrong. Hopefully its something I can replace with an uprated part!!!

Thermostat and temp sender were replaced when I purchased the car, it also had a major service in January this year inc all filters, oil and plugs

    Sorry yeah, vagcom says

    MAF giving dodgy readings
Coolant temp sensor giving dodgy readings

Apparently this is the cause of my fuel woes
Both being replaced on Wednesday this week so hopefully this will see the problem gone

I put 16.50 (114.9p/litre)of normal shell petrol in it the last week to last until the vpower came back in stock and I got 109miles for it. Comp said that that was 31.4mpg but working it out with the link above I got 34.5mpg. That was taking it easy.

I put in 65.68 (53.88 litres) of vpower tonight so will let you know how many miles I get from this tank. Will take me a while to get through this tank though as the car doesnt get used that much at the moment.

Will be worth knowing mate thanks, its getting the parts fitted on wednesday though

Z82, had 4 Civics and they are the most reliable cars on the planet IMO, I wouldnt agree that Jap is crap, they arnt as solid and dont have the interior touches and build quality but they are so much fun, Honda and Toyota high revving engines are a right laugh, not much in the way of torque but they make up for it when they scream! Anyway if I was to change it would be next year and ill probably change my mind by then but I have definitley decided not to get any wheels and just replace my tyres instead
