    Urgent major 2.4 v6 bill

    i've had a reasonable oil leak for a while now, about 1ltr every 1000 miles, usual smell of burning oil on manifold and as it was due a cambelt change,i decided to get them to check where oil leak was coming from with a view to fixing. car has done 57000 and is a 2000 car.

    2 hours later and the original quote for 430 for cambelt and waterpump change has grown to about 1450 as it now appears the cam cover gaskets, cam oil seals and cam chain hydraulic tensioners are leaking. How common a problem is this? Also advised its worth changing thermostat as its easy to change if the've got it stripped down this far same with the egr (?) valve. apparently hydraulic tensioners are about 256 each. does this all sound reasonable or am i being fed a line? help/advice appreciated thanks

    Stitch up.

    The V6 motors tend to leak oil from the cover plate, under the intake plenum.
    I've never charged anywhere near that amount.

    at the moment its in their workshop all stripped down ready for the new bits to go on, and i'm in the cupboard hiding from the bank manager!

    The 2.4 V6 also tends to be high on oil consumption unfortunately. I usually get through 2-3 litres of oil every 6k miles. It consumes more on longer trips. I use to drive up and down the country on occasions. The dip stick reading usually drops by 1/3 after a 300 mile single trip. I use to top it up every 2-3 months. A few guys with the same engine has similar issues.

    My 2,6L V6 doesn't use any oil between services at all.

    She's covered 211,000 miles too.

    try usa ebay for the tensioners - i got (a genuine) one for my 1.8 for half the audi uk price from a stateside seller. obviously more expensive if you don't have a "customs-friendly" contact over there to send it on to you, as you'd have to pay vat & import duty...

    Holy wowza, Ive barely used half a litre in 8000 miles. Im actually gonna change next month and gonna use the same oil as it has remained reasonably clean and its barely used any. I think I would cry if I had the V6 if that was the case.

    It's quite a common issue on the 2.4 but I got used to it and regarded it as normal. What I didn't make clear was my annual mileage is 6k which uses just over 2 litres of oil over the whole year - this includes travelling up and down the country which uses a bit more. I've also noticed that different grades of oil affects consumption. Consumption tends to be better with 10W40 as oppose to 5W30.

    I think the S4 never needs topping up between services. According to a mate I know.

    its with a local audi specialist. wow! thats some oil consumption for audi if you add all the cars up. i think we should all scrap our cars and save the planet! What happened to 'vorsprung durch technic' i thought audi's were supposed to be reiable. after this bill - no more audi for me! and mine's got a full audi history and low mileage.

    Thats a lot of oil guys! My 2.6 barely uses anything between services,
    Try http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ for the tensioners, thats where I got mine when I had the cam belt done and dont remember it being OTT

    Its the age more than the milage, i mean a few oil leaks aren't the end of the world. However your expert does seem to be trying it on a bit, and these jobs are actually quite easy as a DIY.

    If however you are going to get this done, get them to change the front crank seal while they are in there, it will take about 10 more mins to do when it s apart, or much the same again to change another day

    that really is a ridiculous amount of money, i'd be telling them to forget it and taking it elsewhere.

    my 1.8t uses about half a litre every 1000miles. But then its a 160kmile engine and has had dubious servicing in the past so i figure thats not too bad. I view any garage with suspicion after being ripped off too many times. Pretty much the main reason i got into doing the work myself. I started small with things like brakes, 40 for the parts or >100 for a garage to change them, and went from there.

    The V6 engine does suffer from leaks from the cam tensioner gaskets. They also leak from the oil control solonoid on the variable valve unit I doubt you need to replave the whole units.
    To replace the tensioner base gaskets you do need to remove the cams, worth doing it as part of a cam belt service.

    thanks for all the feedback, unfortunately (or fortunately) its almost all back together, should get it back tomorrow. I've asked for all the bits that are taken off the engine and i intend to get them inspected. It'll be interesting to see the end result!
