Dash problems!

After stopping off in the petrol station today, when i returned the power to the dash had disappeared and the car will not start!
I have checked all the fuses and tried to connect vag-com.
The vag-com controller will not talk to the engine or instruments but will talk to other things like radio and interior monitor.
the car is 1998 tdi 110.
Can anybody help in anyway?

just a quick update for those of you interested,
the problem was the ignition switch, £95 from audi!

£95 for a B5 ignition switch, which incidentally, is the same as the B4 Audi 80?!

Last one I purchased from Audi was £27 + VAT.

Unless that was the fitted cost?

I had a similar issue with mine. You can change this yourself its pretty straightfoward and there is a good how to guide in the tech section in Audiworld. Part only is around £20 I think.
