Found a VAG memo scanner (hand held OBDII socket powered) tool which has the following features:-

Control Unit Information
Read Fault Codes
Measuring Blocks
Clear Fault Codes

Dealership Code Set

Sound any good? I've not got a laptop so seems like a good alternative to VAG-COM.

i think pre 99 cars aren't fully obd2 compliant, so just check it works ok on these if your car is.

Really?!.. didn't know that. That must be why I'm having so many problems trying to get vagcom to work.

I don't see why - VAG-COM works on all models.

How much is the other scan tool, out of interest?

I'm just using an OBDII cable with vagcom but keep getting 'car not ODBII compatible if VW or Audi please try selecting individual controllers' then I try that and vagcom tries four times and then I get 'controller not available'.

Doesn't actually state 'ODBII' but does say works with all VAG cars!
