Audi 1.8T AEB engine oil light displayed on dash.

Today after getting my car MOT'd i noticed the oil can symbol displaying on the dash. Stopped and checked oil. Found it to be just below max so topped up. On restarting the light never came on but it was noisey. Checked for any leaks all ok.

Now the oil light has can back on after 2 miles so i am thinking maybe oil pressue. If it is the oil pump failing. How easy is it to replace the oil pump on these engines?

get pressure checked as had the same with mine, had pump changed and it is a real pain as cross member in way of sump.

mine turned out to be the pressure valve in the oil filter housing!

To get the pump out its a royal pain, but if you dont you end up with this

I kept putting it off and blew it up before i got around to it. The crossmember isnt that bad to remove but you will need to support the engine and box using an engine crane or similar and then its around 12 bolts to drop it down and out. then the sump can be dropped out to get to the pump. Its only 60-70 part

Thanks for the info. It sounds like topend noise like the oil isnt getting up to the head. Where is the Pressure valve? Is it easy to change?
How will i check the oil pressure as there isnt a gauge on my display?

Lol, seems one of those days, huh.

My oil light came on today, and she began a top end rattle. Aborted a day out with my girlfriend to Bluewater.

Had to join the AA on the spot to get home - cost me 175. Got her home, and added a litre of oil - was between minimum and maximum, she's quiet now, but haven't driven her far yet.

If the V6 is dead, I'll not bother buying an A4 R&D car, just begin installing the V8, and buy a cheap 100 runabout.

I fitted a VDO pressure gauge when I started to get problems, I had one from my tuned g60 so just through it in as it was to hand, I think it is worth fitting for the piece of mind of knowing everything is fine.
the pressure relief valve is located in the oil filter housing and I think it is easy enough to change, my local specialist did mine for me.
    best get pressure checked 1st.

mine was ok when the engine was running at speed but at idle the lights came on. turned out this valve was dumping all the pressure as it was stuck open

Hope it's all ok - mine turned out to be a leaking coolant expansion tank, it ran so hot, the oil got pretty thin, and of course at that oil temperature, pressure dropped.

Just waiting for a new coolant tank and cap to be delivered this morning, then that should be it.

k7erg, when you take oil filter off, remove oil cooler and 3 bolts holding housing to block, when i did this the valve fell out ! had come loose so was being bypassed, i screwed it back in tight, changed oil, tappets quietened down and i never got a light again, i had even bought new pump but didnt need it
