Manual heater control

I have a manual heater in my 95 A4. Unfortunately it has seized so that air comes out of the windscreen vent / footwell vent only. There is a lot of resistance when i try to turn the vent selector and then the dial moves but doesn't change the air distribution!

I have just had a look by trying to remove it, but there is not enough slack on the control cables to be able to pull out the unit to remove the cable.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

There maybe something physically blocking the vent flaps at the floor level! Check for any foreign objects that could be causing a problem. And 4 eggs by the way!!
