Brake/stop lamp fault

Hi all, i usually post in the B6 section but my friend has a problem with his B5 so thought you guys may know more.

He has a late 1.8SE B5, it seems to constantly warn him of a brake light bulb failure and some times the brake lights stay on but get brighter when he brakes?

anyone got any ideas how to fix this as he has changed the bulbs cleaned out the lens/light board but has had no luck

my bulb warning light kept flashing at me when i bought my car, turned out to be twin filament bulb fitted wrong way round, pins are slightly offset and meant to go in one way, worth checking?!

Brake light switch?
I beleive it is located around the brake pedel.
Cost - about £15 ish. Easy to replace.
