Water problem?

got in car this morning drove about 20 yeards and the water level warning came on. went back and had to stick in 4 pints of water ( didn't have time to mix up with anti-freeze)
I'm assuming that i have a bigger under lying problem if I'm losing water somewhere but can't see any water under car when it's been standing etc.

I suppose what I'm looking for is , is this normal for an Audi A4? haven't had anything similar with other cars... but you never know.

got my fingers crossed that it's not the head gasket!!!

My 2.8Q uses a little bit of water between services, and with some hard cornering it's quite easy to set the warning light off. I'd wait & see what happens now you've topped it up.
