At a guess I would say at least 2-3 inches deep could be more - will have to measure it this weekend.

It was 2 in the morning and i was the only car on the road, and to be fair if i was a cop i would have pulled a shiny black M3 with heavily tinted windows as well. He was very polite and unobtrusive, but you should have seen his face when his partner confirmed that the car was actually registered to me (i am only 22!)

I think that it depends very much on the council involved. I had a similar problem in Bromsgrove - hit a pothole in a 328Ci - dented one alloy and damaged two tyres. I simply telephoned the council, who sent me out a claim form. They then paid out without any fuss ( or any solicitors. )
I am not sure what the law says regarding the councils obligations - your best bet is if you have any form of legal protection insurance ( normally would have been an option on your insurance policy, or the AA and RAC have legal help lines if you are a member ) then give them a ring. If you have uninsured loss recovery then they will try to get your money off the council for you, without ( I believe ) affecting your NCB.
Worst case, you could claim on your car insurance and they will chase the council for the money... You have to be very careful on this last one though, because if they don't get their money for whatever reason you may well find it costs you much more over time.

I claimed Glasgow City Council for a buckled MV' on my 330d. As long as you cover all the bases you should be ok.
What i did was the following after i buckled my wheels.
1.Took digital pictures with something in the pictures as a reference to size.I also put some markings around the pothole with road line marking paint to look like someone from the council had been there.
2.Measure the size,depth and width etc.
3.I phoned the Roads & Lighting Dept and complained using a false name,then phoned shortly after with my complaint,this was so they couldn't say it had just appeared.
3.Contacted the Council and they sent me out a claim form .
4.Get a quote for repair plus a KDS check to make surte no alignment damage.
I had no hassle at all with my claim,i sent in the claim form with quote for repair,they sent a letter back with an offer to settle,and i agreed and they paid out within about 2 weeks of the saccident,no need for legal proceedings and no hassle at all.
They said it was cheaper to settle with the small number of people who claimed than to fix the roads.

I have a 96 1.8t sport a4 which has been chipped to 230bhp. Its got a decat pipe + mongoose exhaust. Since its been chipped the power below 3000rpm is very lumpy. Its seems to come on to boost then go off. It does this at about 2800rpm ithink, the next time the boost comes in its fine up to the redline.Its very noticeable and quite annoying. Any ideas?
