Hello, I am a newcomer looking for some advice on an A4 I had a look at yesterday. It was a 2000 'W' 1.8T Quattro Sport with 68000 miles advertised at £4999. It would be my first Audi and 4 wheel drive car. There were a few things wrong with the car and I was hoping to get an idea of how much I should be looking to pay for it and anything I need to look out for.

I have not had a chance to look at the service history as the owner was away on business and his wife was unsure of where he keeps it. I believe it to have a full service history but unsure of where from. The car hasn't had much use recently it would seem.

The following are things I picked up from the viewing.

1. Front and Rear brake discs heavily corroded - How much to replace discs/pads all round?
2. The black trim on the bottom of the doors is rusting - Cheap and easy to replace?
3. Should the cambelt have been changed by now?
4. Front foglight smashed.
5. Lots of little scrapes and scratches on door mouldings.
6. The dash digital display had lines missing. Is this expensive to repair?
7. The front bumper was badly stone chipped/scratched.
8. Alloys starting to corrode.

The interior of the car was tidy and outside it was okay apart from the things mentioned above.

I'll contact the owner when he returns to find out more about the service history but what do people think the going rate for a car in this condition with these faults should be? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Steven

I bought some Brembo front discs with new pads the other week from GSF for £90 and it cost me £75 to have them fitted.

Dunno about the other bits though.....

Discs corrode as soon as you wash the car or when it rains, this is not any indication that they need to be changed, just means the car hasn't been driven recently.
You need to run your fingers over the disc to see if they are badly worn i.e. edge is sitting much higher than the rest of the disc and the disc itself is "bumpy".
Look at the pads and see what life they have left in them.
The door trim always starts to disintegrate as water collects there. New trim from Audi is about £25 per door, just one screw to remove then it slides out on runners on the door. Don't try and prise it off as you'll destroy the runners.
Cambelt should have been done at 5 years, but you need to check the service history as not all dealers will do this as a matter of course. Water pump should have been done at the same time.
Job will cost around £350-£400 at an independent specialist. Audi charge nearer £550.
The DIS is a common problem you'll just have to live with as it's a whole new cluster if you want it rectified at around £500-£600.
Scratches and stonechips are a good sign on a 7 year old car. Proves it hasn't been resprayed recently and has been used on the motorway quite a bit.
A 7 year old car with a pristine bonnet has either been resprayed, or has only been used to do the school run, which is not kind to the engine.
Alloys corrode on all Audi's

I bought a 99 (V) 1.8t sport quattro about 18 months ago with 68k on the clock for £6250.. FASH, Cam belt had been done before it needed to be, all new discs and pads and an alloy refurb. I have the same failure on the digi dsiplay.

I would say £5k was a little steep for yours. unless you can do all the work yourself and save the labour cost.
better examples around if you can wait.

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking a price of around £4000 would be suitable due to the current condition of the car and work required. I will enquire further with the seller when they return.

smitch, are the brembo's straight replacements, are they any bigger, drilled/grooved etc, thanks dude!
