    MOT Failed

Just got back from MOT Centre and car failed the MOT for the 1st time on the outer CV Gaiters split on BOTH sides! couldnt believe it oh well sh*t happens got a quote from my local garage who says 100 + VAT for labour for fitting both gaiters.

Audi did not have the part in stock he suggested to try VW. So got CV boots from there 28 inc vat each.
i would only fit genuine parts in this case last thing i want is the boot falling off as the copy ones seem to use plastic tie wraps.

MOT gone up as well @ 50!

The only special tool you will need is a 14mm allen socket to remove the big bolt.Once that is off, you should have enough play to get the shaft out by turning the steering to full lock.
Once out, put the bolt back in and tighten, this will draw the joint off, obviously that will enable you to swap out the dodgy gaiter.I know i had both mine go too.
The joint will push back on once the gaiter is put over the shaft, replacement is the oposite of removal etc etc

does this bolt go through the main brake disc? so once the wheel is off is this the only thing i need to take off?

Unfortunately the same thing happened to me last month when I took mine for an MOT, just one of the CV gaiter split. It failed for the first time @ 66k miles. Had the front brakes & pads replaced at the same time.

mines only done 54k i put my CV gaiters splitting early due to my neighbours new wife keeps parking her car just near my drive (told her a million times to leave more space she does it for a few days then does the same thing after that)
and other cars parking on the other side of my drive thus leading me to nearly doing full lock when getting in and out of my drive.
Parking on my road is getting tight now lucky i have a driveway and a garage.

they do! it dosent cover the engine or the quattro system but the steering, suspension, brakes, front driveshafts and cv joints etc are the same on all A4's

    just a thought

my car failed before on two tyres and a bulb, when i checked the tyres all four were below 1.5mm ? strange

good luck with the new boots!

Lowering the car in itself shouldn't damage the driveshaft CV joints as they are designed to work at all angles of suspension travel.
Generally what kills them is a lack of grease which causes dirt and corrosion to get in. If you have a CV gaitor split don't delay in getting it done as the grease gets flung out every where and water and dirt can get into the joint.
