    Water pump

    Anyone changed the water pump on their 2.8 v6? Is it a fairly straight forward job or would I be better of getting it done by a pro / specialist?

    The whole of the front of the car has to come off, while you're there get the timing belt, idler & tensioner done at the same time.

    The cambelt and tensioner were done by Audi in 2004 (before I had the car). Typically though the dealer has updated their system recently so is unable to confirm whether the water pump was changed at the same time. Apparently they would only have done so if there was an apparent problem with it. I recently heard the horror stories about the pumps ceasing and so I'm gonna change it as a precaution.

    Ahhh Audi classic, the feckers know the water pump only lasts 90k miles but they refuse to change them as a matter of course when doing the cambelt. It's £40 for christsake! They did this to me and I had to get the whole thing done again 15k miles later, luckily by then I'd found a decent specialist who did everything for half the price and did it properly.

    i had something similar with old car where i supplied a water pump tensioner and cam belt etc.told my garage to change the lot, when i went to collect it they said the pump was ok and did not replace it. i told them i still wanted it replaced it so they had to take it all off again and change it.

    I had to get my water pump replaced aftering discovering that the bearings that drives the water pumps were on its way out. That was only at 47k. While they replaced the water pump and bearings they also replaced the cambelt at the same time.
    A4 2.4 V6 2000.

    Andy - You say they're 40 quid! I was quoted 580 + vat by Guildford Audi.

    The water pump is about 40, the rest is labour, which is why it's un****ingbelievable that they don't just replace it as a matter of course when doing the cambelt. Otherwise you end up having to pay all the labour again just to fit a 40 part (ahh, I think I just answered my own question!)

    Don't get it done at Audi, they charge 90+ per hour, find a good specialist and it'll be half the price.

    Not sure which Audi dealer you go too, but The 2 I worked at we wouldn't do a cambelt without the pump, it a no brainer for the savings and cost of pump.

    Mostly the inpeller comes of the pully and just sits there not moving the plastic breaks

    If using a specialist ensure you know others that have used them and buy all the parts yourself
    Both rollers and tensioner and replace poly belt at the same time
    In some cases the camseals leak so get those checked at the same time

    This was Southampton Audi, but there are plenty of similar stories from other members on here, even some asking that the dealer replace the pump regardless and being treated like a nutter, so it's not just a "one off".
    Also Audi replace the pump with one exactly the same whereas a good specialist will use the uprated one with a metal impeller.
    The specialist I go to uses all OEM parts (apart from the water pump), most of them aren't even Audi as they make very little of the engine parts, so you'll get the same quality without the price doubling to pay for the Audi sticker on the side.
