hi, ive just took a deposit on my car but the guy does a lot of miles and is concerned that the cambelt change at 80k will need doing very soon (car has done 70k) to me its 12mths away but with his miles it could be in 2mths. he has said he's going to get a quote to get it done but if its too expensive he'l have to back out. so, how much do you reckon it should cost at a specialist (not main dealer)?

Hi SteveS,

I have to change mine too soon and I asked a specialist in the NW and they said 200 or so.

Hope it still helps to sell the car.

Think it's fairly steep. My mate - AliA4 just paid £350 for his to be done - 1.8NA. I also found a receipt for mine including a couple of other bits and it was about £400odd! not sure if the 2.8 has 2 belts or anything?
It's not your problem is it, if he does such high mileage it's his prob and a 2.8 probably isn't the best choice in the first place! It doesn't make the car faulty or particularly desrved of a price drop in my opinion.

I paid £170 for the parts to do my 1.8t, belt, pulley and tensioner/damper

very true but it could swing the sale if there are other cars that don't need the belt doing, as long as the cost of doing the belt is greater than the price difference

When i bought my 2.8q i found out when i went to pick up the car that it had just had the cambelt and water pump changed and the guy didn't put it in the advert which i thought was a bit of a result. he gave me aload of reciepts with it but they are at home i'll have a look when i get back and let you know what it was. oh and it wasn't done by a dealer but a specialist i believe

Does the 2.8 not need 2 cambelts/pulleys????

This would make it dearer than the 1.8.

My 1.8T was just under £400 at the Audi main dealers.

When I first had my 2.8Q done at Audi it was over £700, and they didn't do the water pump, which then started to seize up 15k miles later, so had it all done again at a specialists including the belts & tensioners for £390. Nice one Southampton Audi!

i must have got a bargain then. £275 all in for the belt, pump and tensioner (parts from audi, fitted by a specialist), on a 2.6 v6!

Mine was about £300 as well but i made a booboo by not changing the water pump, so i'm hoping it will last out. The crank seal was leaking so i had to get that done as well the total billl for the crank seal, sump and timing belt was £800 !

When mine was done it appears to have had a full service aswell and it came to £571.80. but that was also including a power steering pipe and a c/v gaitor. It was £160 for the cambelt kit £40 for the water pump and £150 for labour. which isn't bad for everything that was done. although the front bumper wasn't put back on the mount on the right side properly!

I'd keep an eye on the water pump, mine started to seize and luckily was leaking and actually causing the car to stall at traffic lights. If you don't get any warning signs then the first you'll know about is the cambelt being stripped and most of your 30 valves being dramatically restyled.

thanks guys, i told him roughly £400 so i was'nt to far out. if i was keeping the car another year i'd buy the bits myself from audi and get a local specialist to fit them. but at the offer ive accepted for the car im not prepared to pay for it - and its not due for another 10k anyway.

To be honest the present water pump's only done about 40k so i'm not unduly worried as the car had had the crank seal done just before i bought it, i had to get it done again at an independant as they had damaged the crank seal when refitting it. this was John Fox in Nottingham !

a small, decent garage in uxbridge quoted me +450 pounds for the belt + water pump and all the stuff needed for 30v 2.8 , i had it done a lot cheaper by my friend while i was on holiday abroad.

Had my water pump and belt done at the same time for just over £370 at Newcastle Audi. The problem arised when I heard strange noises from the engine, later discovered that the bearings that drives the water pumps had completely worn. My car did just 47k miles. If anyone replaces their belt I would recommend the water pumps to be replaced as well.
