My Audi A4 TDI 110 has a lovely knack off crunching as I pop it into 4th if I change very slowly and carefully I can do it without the crunch but means that a quick 3rd to 4th changes are out the window. Just wondering what could be causing this and or would a Gearbox Oil change help??

Hi, i dont know about the changing of g'box oil? but i suppose that would do no harm. is your brake fluid topped up?, this also serves as your clutch fluid and if low could attribute to poor gear changes!

has the car covered many miles?

i have always thought audi g'boxes to be strong! the only audi box i heard of going wrong was that of a friend whom in his infinate wisdom decided to drop the clutch at 4000 revs in an s4 engined a4 quattro IN REVERSE!!!! bang!

I'll double check the clutch fluid but I'm sure that ok and if it was low I would have thought it would affect all gears? I'll have a look tomorrow Ta.:)

syncromesh is worn out on 4th mate, had this on 2 audis ive owned over the years . tried changing oil it did make it a little better but did not fix it. had to replace the gearbox to cure it. they usually only do it on a fast gearchange and are worse when warmed up. it was fairly common on audi 80's and 90's quattro models at high millage.

Cheers bud it what I thought, ******. Do the later 6 speed box's fit onto the earlier 110 A4's?

not sure, someone here will know. probably be able to pick up a second hand box or give these people a ring - audi gearbox specialists 01278722359.
