    clutch and flywheel upgrades on 1.8t

    who has them and what have you got?
    was going to get a new lighter flywheel when the clutch is replaced but have had doubts put in my head by AMD.

    any slightly stronger clutches without going solid centre 4 puck with the additional huge left leg?

    I'm looking for one too dude, need to be careful though as my missus drives our car, she wont be grateful for a heavy clutch pedal specially round town, Awesome GTI offer some talk to awesome sarah int he sponsors section of the forum.

    By the way hows your manifold coming on??

    keeping the dual mass Flywheel now, just don;t want to waste time with unproven goods
    $ is good too at the moment

    i can't see the link above due to work blocking the site, but i was looking at ecs tunings single mass flywheel which allows fitment of a s4 or a rs4 clutch, these should be driveable and handle pretty well anything you can through at it on a 1.8T

    oh forgot to mention, but i spoke to awesome gti a while back, they were quite happy to import these if you order through them.

    What one you guys going to go for? Stage 3 or 4?

    stage 4, beware of single mass on inline 1.8t. noisy as feck on idle and standstill, rough on take off and generally ot something you will enjoy around town.....so I believe. would be delighted to be proved wrong by someone who actually has one though. this was what I have been told by two rather large and well know tuning shops. usually found in the ads at the top of the page....not going to argue as they talked themselves out of a sale on a lightweight f/w

    Yeah I have read about this problem too.

    Wonder how long clutches are meant to last on these cars, my car is almost at 60k.

    Clutches are usuallly down to the driver , no set period for them to last , sorry
    But yes we can do the ECS one at a special price of £275.00 + VAT
    This includes the flywheel too

    Its drivablility I'm looking for as my missus drives it, still I need something to hold the power once th new turbo injectors and remap is in place

    The clutch pedal will feel as stock
    The clutch is hydraulic so will not be heavier than OEM and with it not being the paddle one , you will still have a good feel for the biting point

    i've heard the dual mass flywheels don't survive big power upgrades, i maybe wrong as i haven't researched yet. i am going for the one that uses the rs4 oem plate.

    i work on the theory that a noisey flywheel isn't a big issue if you have an engine with 400 -500bhp, the engine isn't exactly going to be a dream to drive round town as it is. i would try and stay away from paddle clutches on a road only car unless it is your sunday toy, they aren't that much fun as they can have quite bad judder on take up and very sharp biting point.

    speak to AMD. he says he has a pile of them (broken) that have come out of IHI'd S3's and RS4's.
    Given that I called him to get a quote for spec and fidanza f/w's I was alos surprised that he talked himself out of £500

    take your point about gearbox noise on a 400bhp engine, but a rattling "dogbox" style gearbox on a daily driving would piss me off, especially if it then had to come out

    Most MkIV 4 cylinder cars will damage the stock dual mass flywheel when the clutch starts slipping. The OEM dual mass flywheel when bought from VW is over $500. ECS Tuning offers a complete clutch upgrade kit that includes a ECS Lightweight 14 lb. steel flywheel that costs less than a flywheel alone from VW. This kit will retain stock like pedal characteristics along with vastly improved clamping force and a larger diameter clutch assembly. The lighter ECS steel flywheel weighs only 14 lbs. versus the 22 lb. stock 1.8T unit. Now also included is the ECS Tuning Clutch Alignment Tool to make installation even easier. All of this and a reduced price for even more incredible savings !

    Hi Sarah, I'm looking to buy the clutch kit from Ecs Tunings, RA4 Clutch kit with solid flywheel, it's $599... How do I order it without paying the high surcharge and tax? R u a UK importer for ecs? Thanks for your help in advance by the way it's for audi a4 1.8t b6 2002.

    wow thats a thread resurrection right there!

    You cant legally buy it without paying VAT, which is the bulk of what the tax thats added on constitutes. Some folk fraudulently lie on the paperwork and put down a false value, thus reducing the charges, but this is obviously illegal.

    On my 1.8T, i used an S2 clutch kit, and modified an Audi 80 flywheel to fit. Works fine and should hold to around 300hp or so. Requires a bit of legwork and effort on your part though sourcing the parts and having them machined to fit.

    im willing to pay the tax, vat etc etc but when i order it directly from ecs tuning... the shipping cost to the uk is alot more than i expected plus im on budget. i read on another forum that there are ecs uk importers where u can order it from them n its more cheaper... but silly of me i cant remember where i saw it.

    i can imagine ur cars running like a beast with the s2 clutch and modified audi 80 flywheel...lol. sounds good.

    Legitimate way to avoid tax and import charges is to have somebody in the states receive the items and then re-wrap them and send the to you described as a gift. You need a chum in the states of course.

    looool.... if only, ur mate would b doing me a huge favour if he did bring it back for me, oh well never mind.

    i found a sachs clutch kit with dual mass flywheel in birmingham for only £340... u reckon it will b any good? best deal i found so far. but i would still prefer the ECS kit.

    The 1Z and S2 clutch is the ideal route to go its cheap and uses all OEM parts, i did it all for just under £300 iirc !!

    Nope, gifts incur VAT and duty just like any other import. Threshold is slightly higher but not by any relevant amount to make a difference to a $600 clutch kit.


    The shipping cost is high, because the item is heavy, and sending heavy stuff to the UK from the USA is expensive. Try to get yourself your own shipping quote and you'll see what i mean.

    It works out to b around £450 and I know a mechanic who will charge me £180 labour so let's jus say about £650 altogether...more or less.
    Hope someone out there can help me... Any1 here got ecs clutch kit installed in their audis?

    I think PSI tuning could the ECS steel flywheel for around £250 (enquired last year). Then you could get a S4 or RS4 clutch kit from Eurocarparts for about £150 when they,re running a discount. Might be worth a call..

    one of my mates recently brought back a transfer box from an E30 325ix as hand luggage from the states... but then this was for his own car.

    get your mate to ship it from the US to UK making sure they are shipped as "goods being returned to the UK".......

    no tax on property that is already yours and it is still insured

    assuming you don't mind bending the rules that is....
