Toying with the idea of a flip key!

My car currently has a factory fitted remote locking system, but does not have the flip keys as seen with 1998 onwards A4's. I have decided to look into possibly modifying a flip key my fitting the innards of my spare remote key, together with the immobiliser chip and have a new key blade cut for the key. Has anyone done this before, or will i be wasting my time.

Here's a pic of my current key:

Its possible as far as i know but you need to buy a blank blade from somwhere and you still need to get the key coded via VAG-COM. But i think if you have all the stuff its easy enough.

PS. I am not sure if the 3 button flip keys will work. You may need to track down a 2 button one.

    I have a flip key on my A4 1997.
I lost the key in the summer and bought a new one and had It programed by Audi.
I have the part numbers if you need them.

Yes, it will work with the right 2 button flip key.

You can also re-use your existing blade by shaping the end with a hobby drill so that it is a match for the flip key one.

Swap transponder capsule, sync, and away you go.

Hi there, thanks for the info. What is the part number of the flip key you bought, and is it a 2 button or a 3 button?

So, if i swap the immobiliser transponder capsule over, i will only need vag-com to program the remote locking part of the key, am i right?

I took my own key appart, and compared it with pictures of a flip key, but i am not sure if the remote button part of the key will fit into the casing of a flip key.

I think it's worth a go, i will have a look out for any cheap 2 button flip keys on the old flea-bay

    Hi,
I have a two button, three button is not used on this model.
you buy the key in two parts, the blade part and the transponder part.
You have to take your log book and proof of idenity to Audi to have the key cut, takes ablout a week.
I do not have the part numbers as I am at work,I will try to post tomorrow.

When I acquired my A4 I wanted to have a spare (flip)key blade cut and was initially told some clap-trap by my local Audi Centre that the keys were 'laser cut' and had to be sent away for.........
Visiting my local VW dealer parts dept a few days later I asked if this was true (knowing that Golf and Passats have almost identical flip keys to the A4)......
I was most surprised to be told that the flip key blades were easily cut while-you-wait but the nearest Dealership that did them was about 30 miles away.......
I rang them up and was told I would need to bring proof of identity and car V5 etc etc.
On visiting the said dealership to have a key cut they didn't ask me for any form of ID/proof of car ownership and proceeded to supply and cut me a new flip key blade for 5.29 inc vat , they even for free cut a blade that I had sourced via Ebay but couldn't get a key cutter to cut!

    Thumbs up

Here are the part numbers you need to make two button flip key.
    4B0837246AINB KEY 46.05 + Vat
    4D0837231R01C REMOTE 34.43 + Vat

Paid about another 48.00 to have the code changed on my car as I lost
    the other key.

All done by Audi main dealer.

If you swap your existing transponder capsule into your new key, you dont need VAG-COM at all.

Just the normal 2 key sync method.

So, how do you programe the remote locking without vag-com?

Note that this isn't the same as programming the key for the immobiliser - you need the dealers help to do this.
