Hi,

we have a 1998 A4 tdi quattro which has developed leaks from both sides at the rear diff where the driveshafts go into the diff.

Has anyone tackled this ? How bad a job is it ? Can the seals be done without stripping down the entire diff?

Would it be easier/cheaper to look for a used diff rather than look at repair? So far as I can tell the rear diff is the same for all A4 quattros.

All comments / experiences gratefully received.

thanks

Mas,

This is a reasonably common problem. The seals aren't that expensive and can be done with the diff still in the car. Makes the job (and so many others) much easier if you have a ramp.

Hi, having just had my seals replaced it seemed pretty straightforward but dont know if i would tackle it myself,it only cost me £60 labour and took an hour and a half to do at an independent audi specialist..
The seals were £8.51 ea plus vat.
Hope this may help.

thanks guys. I wasnt sure if it was going to be diff out and rebuild. A couple of hours and under £100 sounds good.

I can get access to a pit though so it might be possible to diy. Any links to suitable instructions ? I havent looked but I assume the haynes manual doesnt cover it ?
