    Unhappy S4 B5 keeps dieing / won’t start, help

    Well the post I posted yesterday was about my b5 s4 not starting after it was driving fine, it’s getting gas and its turning over but just wont start then half an hour later it started and drove fine. Today I go to start my car and it wouldn’t start but then finally started again. I was at a intersection and it started reving to 3000 rpms then dropped back down when I went to go again. It then died on me in the middle of the intersection. I finally got it to start again and drove it back to my work about 5 minutes away and the whole way all it wanted to do was die. It kept skipping and trying to stall. Does anyone know of anything I can check for or look at before I have to have it towed to the garage? Any help is much appreciated.

    That is really really odd. I have not heard of a problem like that. Does not seem to link to the common faults the B5 suffers. A scan with VAG-Com would help find the fault. I would suggest posting on www.audi-world.com - that is a US based site and the guys there would be able to help out especially if someone was local to you or knew a specialist in your area.

    Well I hooked it up to a scanner that shows the stats of your engines performance and readings and I think I have found the fault to be the Temperature sensor, It would jump to saying 190 degrees Fahrenheit to -40 degrees Fahrenheit If im right when this sensor tells the computer its cold it will dump more gas in which would explain the stalling. Im picking up the part today to see how this work out ::fingers crossed::

    that's a fairly common fault on older Audi's, we had the same on the wifes 80, disconnected the sensor and it ran fine untill i could source one, not heard of it on an S4 before though

    Had the same problem on my 2.8 cost £25 and 30 min's of my time.

    Ahh yeah... good luck. Hope that is all it is mate :D - you are quite right - that sensor would tell the ECU to dump more fuel when cold. If it dumps too much when warm it will flood (and you will smell petrol) when cold it wont get enough fuel and if it starts will run like kak.

    thank you guys for all your input, i put in the new coolant temperature sensor and she is running good now, solved the problem and a very cheap fix at that!

    Yeah I couldn’t even imagine what it could’ve possibly been, all I saw was $$$$$$ signs. Im very thankful it was a cheap fix to something so serious
