does an aftermarket diverter valve make any difference to performance seeing that my 1.8t as one as standard?

No, not a lot. it might make your car hold boost better. Generally people fit an aftermarket one like Forge as it is more reliable than the std valve and is maintainable.The std ones have a tendancy to fail and develope internal leaks.

^^ thats right a piston one removes the problem of the diaphram and will easily support change in spring tension.
