Hi recently brought privately a 1998 S4 avant 41000 miles full ASH but have noticed a strange rattle when cold and when the engines under load. first thought it was a heat sheild rattle but had it up on a lift and it sounds like its coming from somewhere near the drivers side manifold any ideas /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif

No idea how im going to tell if its a blow or not might run it down to kim collins about 2hours away have you heard of him? or could i tackle it myself?

Sounds like the well known symptom of a broken manifold. S4s are known to do this, and there was a recall for some cars. You should get it fixed under warranty, or if you don't have one at least with a good will jesture from Audi. Mine made a metallic rattle under load at low engine speeds...

sounds expensive!
looks like its a trip to audi then thanks for your help /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ok first of all...bow down to the S4... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had a similar problem on my A3 where the gasket was leaking between the turbo and the manifold, I even took it too an exhaust specialist who searched for almost an hour with no success. You'll know if it's an exhaust leak if you can block off the exhaust with your hand (Is it twin exit on the S4...if so you'll need some help obviously) if you can keep it blocked then you know you definately have a leak. My leak was a very distinctive clattering noise and locating it was impossible even though we knew it was leaking and I got prepared for the worst of a cracked turbo or exhaust manifold /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Anyway the guy phones a tuning friend of his who specialises on Audi's and he tells hime that the 1.8T is known to blow these gaskets, so 6 or 7 quid later and 15 minutes of labour and the thing was fixed.

Now although my problem was on the A3 I guess it could be similar on the S4 and so thought I'd share it.

I've just had a look at the parts CD and I see that the place I had a leak has a sealing washer on the S4, but that doesn't mean it couldn't leak I suppose, more importantly there is gaskets on the exhaust to turbo connection to be checked. If you get it up on a four post ramp/lift any leaks should be easily identifiable in the main exhaust system, but if it's in the manifold as sugested then it could be very dificult to find.

I had something similar been driving me crazy, was the wastgate on the turbo, sounded like a rattle against something.

getting the turbo rebuilt - under warranty thank god

thanks for the input, had it up on a lift already and it sounds like the rattle/blow is coming from the manifold or the turbo gaskets. Spoken to Kim Collins quattro specialist and after describing the sound to him, he seems to think its a cracked manifold a common fault on the early S4. fifteen hundred pounds to change both sides and thirteen hundred pounds for one side, expensive because its a engine out job. I have not got a warranty and do not think it would be covered with one anyway.
looks like i will have to start saving /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If its the turbo the engine comes out, if its the exhaust manifold the gearbox comes out but not the engine (oddly).

I can only quote Kim Collins on having to remove the engine to do the manifolds, perhaps he was giving me the worst case senario. Unfortunately i do not have the expertise or the tools to do the job, but am open to offers or advise on perhaps a cheaper option. Collins said that audi revised the design on later models and i guess these ones will be fitted to mine, as to after market manifolds i have no information on these but would welcome some if any avalible or perhaps a web site
dose anyone no of a warranty that would cover this work?
looked into warranty direct 333 pounds a year, but it does not cover the exhaust or manifold. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Last time I looked at Warranty direct they did cover the manifolds. That is why I took my policy with them. But that was last year. I've not bothered this year.

My manifold(s) were done under warranty, although they had to make calls to Audi UK 1st. It may have been that as a previous recall, it was covered under that, but I did sign a warranty form authorising the work.

Hi had Audi Have a quick look off the record the other day, and although my local dealer whitehouse(Dartford Kent)have limited experience of dealing with the S4 one of their engineers had a look. The engine was warm by the time i got there so the engineer could just here the rattle. although he was unable to find where it was coming from. We blocked both pipes and he listened to the engine and could not find a blow, we then listened around the engine with a long screw driver and could hear the rattle on the drivers side turbo/heat sheild, which is not loose, after about 15 minutes he walked away scratching his head saying I would have to book it in /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I want to get a warranty in place before i book her in to either Kim Collins or Audi for obvious reasons. It would have been nice to be able to find out what the problem was, although the input from all you Guys has been a great help.

I will keep you posted,
thats if the rattle has not driven me crazy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I had the heat shields go on my S4 late last year, although my dealer took until March to confirm it. The symptoms were a light clatter from cold and a 'crackle' under load from about 2000rpm upwards.

I'm told by several forum members (here and the other main UK site)that you can live with it with no problem IF it is the shields, but eventually they'll fail and you'll have to replace them.

I had warranty, but it was specifically excluded as a part of the exhaust system! Wayside Audi had the car in for the work which they stated IS an engine out job.

Total cost was £2500 for the engine out etc and about £200 or so (IIRC) for the parts.
Audi UK and the dealer both helped out with the cost as I was furious having only had the car 5 months before the sound appeared. You need to put in some of the cost yourself if you get offered this option as that way you get 2 years guarantee on the work if it's done by a main dealer.

The really bad news is it is a re-occuring problem, MacRS4 reckoned he'd got through 3 sets. After checking with the previous owner of my car it turned out he'd had it done once prior to my acquiring it - the car is 4 years old with 64K miles, and it's on it's third set....

Vorsprung Durch Technik - as they like to say in Germany.

Beta Test Auf England..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif
