Hi all.

After crying a lot after discovering my new (to me) S4 has a gearbox issue, I have come to the conclusion that it would be cheaper to get a recon unit and fit it, as opposed to getting mine stripped...

It was a private sale, btw, so no real come back, and didn't hear the knocking on the test drive - so my problem, not his.

I have seen a g/box from a 1999 S4 with 59k on it for £750 + VAT...

now, my question...

is this 6sp box the same as other 6-sp boxes in the A4 range...?

s4 gearboxes are the same, a4 boxes i believe are different slightly as are a6 boxes , you need an s4 box to replace an s4 box. can i have yours i need a few parts of one for mine i'm sure are savageable from yours

If he don't want it I would be intrested in it, thats if you do get rid of it.

Good time to upgrade the clutch if your thinking of more power at a later date too.

Not a problem.

Mine works fine and is smooth if you drive it carefully. If you put the box under heavy load (as in caning it/assertive driving!), you get some clunking from 2nd and 3rd. The rest of the box is fine.

If it's the gears, it'll cost more to repair that to get a recon box.

I'll keep you posted.
