Show us your sat/nav

hey all im shortly looking to purchase sat/nav unit for my a4, sadly i cant afford the genuine double din unit, which would fit where my symphony unit would go.

so im looking for ideas of mounting the sat/nav pda type or other.
not sure if i want the one thats stick on the window.

Thanks in advance

Re: Show us your sat/nav

I'll take a piccy tomorrow and upload...

I use an iPaq and TT5. I use a vent mount (very solid, not one that vibrates) and a custom iPaq holder - all works well and does not look out of place.

Re: Show us your sat/nav

Ras, I've got a Navman ICN510. mounted on a Brodit clip & mount, & hard wired to an ignition live under the dash. I posted some pics up a while ago. I've found them here they are:

The great thing about the Brodit Clip & mount system is that the clip is specific to the car, and the mount is specific to the satnav you choose, so you can buy a clip for your A4& a mount for a TomTom, Navman or whatever.

The mount is usually designed to fix the pin end of the charger cable into place, so that as soon as you slot the satnav down onto the mount, it pushes down onto the charger pin. If you look at the second pic, you can see the pin sticking up on the right hand end of the mount, & the cable disappearing under the dash just below. It's a simple, but brilliant system & surprisingly elegant for an aftermarket solution.

I bought mine from here:

Hope this helps.

I have recently researched it and I ended up buying the Tomtom Go 300... seems to be the one people prefer over the current navman icn520. I had the 520 for about a week and sent it back in favour of the Tomtom... deffo the way to go - Unless you use a windows based smartphone or pda - then makes sense to just get tomtom for that.

I think the original question was less about which model of satnav to choose and more about how to mount it.

Re: Show us your sat/nav

I'd endorse the Brodit recommendation. I previously had a vent mount but it broke the slats in the vent, then a screen mount but found it shoke about a bit.
Now I've a Brodit mount that clips over the vent, not into it, and a custom holder for my Dell X3 and it holds it rock steady.

Re: Show us your sat/nav

I've been very happy with my Navman. The latest 520 version is in matt-black rather than silver, so is more discreet, but if you shop around carefully, you can still find 510s for sale at very discounted prices.

Like here: Linky

There's no doubt that the most popular brand is TomTom. From what I can tell, the TomTom 300 & The Navman are pretty similar in functionality, but further up the Tomtom range & you get other stuff, like phone interface etc. I guess the answer is, try them out and decide which one you like best.

But for the install, there's no doubt Brodit is the way to go.

Re: Show us your sat/nav

thanks jeff for all the info.
when you leave the car parked does the Bracket stay in place? its just the police do advise to remove even the bracket... as common place for the sat/nav unit when car is parked . is the glove box or under the seat. if thieves see a bracket thats where they will look.

also to other audi sat/nav owners are more pics out there
TIA.

Re: Show us your sat/nav

I leave my brodit mount (with iPaq holder) in place all the time as I've hard wired in the cradle for my iPaq. The brodit is easy to install and remove, so if you was concerned you could do this.

I will take some pics, just not had alot of time recently and it's always dark when I get in from work, hopefully I get some for you tomorrow or Sunday (if I can pull myself away from the rugby).

Same here as Kevint, the bracket does stay in place, yes. I never leave the satnav unit in the car, though

I use my Nokia N70 and Tomtom mobile with a bluetooth gps thingy.

Works well and sits in a cradle mounted onto a bracket that clips over the vents in the centre

Got a Nokia N70 with route 66. Not the most advanced system, but it works well and was only 90 including a full multi position suction mount, MMc Card, Bluetooth GPS and a card reader thingy .

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics, it was very sunny this morning and I've not got any software to hand to resize them, so I'll just link to them instead.
