    New tyres needed - budget/hard wearing recommendations?

    I need 4 tyres pretty soon.

    The budget tyres that I had new and started their life on the front of the car were moved to the rear after 6 months. They have survived 2 years and 22k for a cost of only £50 each (fitted) so I'm happy with that.

    But, the Continental Sports I had fitted to the front 18 months ago, which admittedly did reduce road noise and did make the cars drive feel much better need replacement at the same time, so less than 18 months and probably around the 15k mark for miles?

    Can anyone recommend a good compromise please, a hard wearing tyre that feels good to drive? The car is the TDi auto so I am not a quick driver and do not need a sporty tyre.

    What I do need is something that will last, not feel awful and noisy and of course the cheaper the better!

    What sort of mileage should a tyre last on a B5?

    I use Vredestein on my B5 2.5tdi, great in wet, get around 20k out of them, they're £70 a corner, but I am willing to pay for a tyre that scores well in the tyre reviews

    I use Dunlop Fast Response tyres on my 2.5TDi Avant quattro. Good for 20k miles at least on my oil burner which isn't exactly lightweight. Excellent road holding in the wet, low road noise, could be better in the snow but you can't have it all. Should be able to get them form £80 a corner.

    When I bought my car it had Dunlop SP2000 they were hopeless in the wet and downright dangerous in winter, much older tyre design than fast response tho

    I personally like/use continental sport contact 3's i can fault them except they may be a little noisy but they keep the car planted to the road wet or dry !!

    Sorry OP.

    On my TDi I used Michelin Primacy but just purchased a set Pilot Sport 3, as they now do PS3 in 16" unlike the old PS2's which were 17" upwards. I know people think 16" look rubbish but with the state of the roads where I live I've never had any problems with damage, unlike when I used to run 18" & 19" I went through 4 alloys in just over 2 years.....

    Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 are excellent, grip amazingly, and wear pretty well too. I've done over 20k on my set and they've still got a bit of life left. Not too expensive either.

    I'm currently on Kumho KU37 Sports and have to say I am very impressed for a tyres that's only £75 a corner. Took them out on a track day last Saturday and they were bloody super during the odd dry lap and surpsingly good during the mostly monsoon ones. I'm not one for sticking a car into a wet corner doing 3 figures unless I am very confident in my rubber

    the problem is, most of those "pretty good" tyres are more or less the same price as Eagles these days. The kumhos, hankooks, Falkens and the other various decent budget rubber have all gone up in price such that the difference between those and the eagles is now so small, the eagles become the no-brainer option.

    The price difference between Eagles and my Kumho's was £40 a tyre! That's £160 which is a little more than the small difference you suggest and the guys on M3 Cutters rate the Kumho higher than the Eagle F1 anyway.

    I rate Kumhos very highly.
    I've been running them for years on my Audi, GTI and BMW.

    I drive a TDI Auto and they are great in the wet and drive for the driving that I do.
    I've been all over scotland, france and spain with Kumhos on and not had one issue or bad thing to say.

    They always seem to be priced very well as well.

    No more Korean crap for me now, I rated the KU31 despite the pointless 3.5 mm rim protector and so the KU39 was purchased, no complaints except their condition after 2.5 years .

    I guess it depends on the tyre size. In the size i was looking at (225/45/17) the Eagles were around 80quid.

    A quick look on camskill shows the Kumhos and Hankooks are actaully dearer!

    And there really isnt much under that £80 price point that would even come close to the Eagles performance.

    Size often does move the goal posts, 225/40/18 92W from Camskill is £75 for the KU37 and £96 for the Eagle F1. I paid £75 a corner fitted for mine, the Eagles would come in at £110 a corner by time you allow for delivery and fitting.

    I had a Triumph Dolomite Sprint (lowered, poly bushes, Spax adjustables, LSD, warmer cam) on Pirelli P3000, it was actually pretty good, left equal sized black marks when driven in anger

    Uniroyal rainsport 3's getting good write ups at present, £80.10 per corner from camskills @225/40-18...

    I'm moving away from "sport" orientated tyres these days, last two years my biggest heart in mouth moments have been with said tyres [Vredestein/dunlop] in nothing more iniquitous than standing water on the A90, all tyres @ or over 3.5mm.............. canna be arsed with it!

    [sorry must add the above were before we had the tq, mind you it came with <50% tyres on it..]

    I've used older Uniroyal Rainsports, and they were alright, but still not a patch on the F1's. Maybe these have upped the game, but no proper group tests available yet pitting them against other tyres in controlled environment.

    I really think you cant beat the current top rated sports tyres, even in wet weather. You've not said what tyres you've used, but i dont know any vredestein or dunlop that would come close to the top rated tyres like the F1's, Contis SportContact 5P, or michelins Pilot Sport etc.

    Camskill have the eagles down to £89 in your size:

    Ran Lassa's on my 1.9tdi a4 for €75 a corner and got 25k out of them. Couldn't fault them.
    Recently put Interstate on ac2.5tdi a6, at €70 a corner. 8k done so fat no problems in the wet or dry and wearing nice and even.

    If you think "Lassa" and "Interstate" tyres are good, you either drive everywhere at 30mph and never turn corners, or you've never had an actual GOOD tyre to compare them to!

    i'm just wondering what to get myself as it's time to get the winter wheels off, current summer tyres are RE050A's but they are discontinued unfortunatly, i like the feedback they give as an old B5 needs all the help it can get in that respect.
    I think i'll go with RE040's this time around

    I don't push the B5 about so not fussed about getting heat in the tyres ect, I use the Integra for that

    Yeh, but the point is on wet/greasy roads they're useless.

    Given thats a primary consideration for a UK road car i cant see how they could be a good choice at all.

    No probs bud, I get my tyres from Kev usually, he's at least £5 a corner cheaper than Target in Princes Street who are the other Vredestein supplier.
    Drew claims to be cheapest in Perth, so put him to the test!

    Nexens and primewells are ****e, if people give them good reviews its probably people from the caravan club that dont drive fast or take corners at speed, i had maxxis on at one point, now they do tyres for the motox industry and pretty well known so you automatically go they should be ok .... Nope just another ditchfinder !!!

    someone who's used to Event tyres obviously haha.

    going back to the goodyears i do side with you on outright grip, infact an ADAC test i have here in the wet they only came 2nd to the continental sport contact 5.
    I just liked the feeback the RE050A's gave which i'd like to keep, the old RE010 that came on the integra were brilliant for feedback on the road but i'll admit they are nowhere in cornering performance compared to a yoko AD08 which i have.
    Just depends what you want/like as a driver.


    however if i do get them and regret it i'll let you mock me

    I once had a new, yes NEW, Suzuki swift GTI that funnily enough came with tyres from the factory. Can't remember what make but they were totally unsuited to the UK's weather conditions, made the car treacherous to drive at beyond 7/10ths.
    Found out later they use volcanic ash/grit to make their tarmac grippy in the homeland so the tyres just didn't heat up the way they should have when in Fife!!

    On my personal scoreboard just now its Goodyr closely followed by Uni3's then Vreedst's at this point in time.....

    The A6 actually came with continentals on it all round!!
    Well capable of keeping the mph up high when needed, but it isn't all about speed. You have to be able to enjoy a car for all it's aspects.
    By the way, when exactly do you get time to test all these tyres yourself, as you always seem to be on here or every other forum.
    Now, I'm sure your a bright guy who sounds very knowledgable about the Audi marque, but in all fairness stop trying to know all about everything based on what you've read here, there, and everywhere.
    Nobody likes a 'know it all' - respect where it's due though.

    I had Lassas on my first Toledo, they were awful. Understeer at 10mph on a greasy roundabout. Never bought them since.
