    Turbo kicks out to soon

My turbo only stays on for short time. Any one know what the problem could be? I am new to the Audi family, it is a 2001 A4 Quattro Avant

They only have a tiny turbo, so they do tend to run out of puff higher up the rev range. Change up earlier and use the available torque in the midrange or get it remapped for more boost. Is it standard? 180bhp?

You really need a boost guage to see whats going on.

Changing up early might "feel" faster, but (assuming ofcourse its not broken and is just standard) revving it out properly WILL be faster.

As far as I know it is stock. I just purchased it, previous owner tried to work on it and did a shotty job. The one short trip I took it on the turbo stayed on when I put the pedal down and the car felt like it had some power to it. I tried it again on the same trip and it seemed as though the turbo left as soon as it came on. I have a couple vw's but like this Audi much more, not to mention I like to wrench on cars.
Lcd is bad so have to get it fixed, but maybe it is going into limp mode?

I live in York, PA, do you know what I need to upgrade turbo and or how to go about remapping it?

Like Aragorn says, you really could do with a boost gauge to check if it's producing full boost. That's a start. You might have a leak somewhere. Diverter valves and pipes are common culprits. But it could be many things really. Take it to a specialist and let them have a look. There is one slap bang in the middle of York but I can't remember their name. Maybe someone else can help with that. For a start (and it won't cost anything) have a good look round under the bonnet. Check hose clamps are tight and that you don't have any split or knackered hoses.

Sounds a bit like limp mode.

VCDS is an invaluable tool for these cars, get one, even if its a cheapy ebay one, just so you can check for faults etc.

I presume by "York, PA" your in the US? This is primarily a UK forum, and there are slight differences between the models. Your car will most likely have electronic throttle, whereas UK 1.8T quattros are all cable throttle. Thats a good thing though as it means you have a wider range of diagnostics available to you.
