Driving in to work this morning I started to list all the jobs and faults that needs doing on Audrey but as the list grew I thought it might be best to write it down and see what people has to say about it.
Plus someone might have the part needed.

Car: A4 98 Avant 1.9 TDI (AFN) Automatic.

Faults, in no particular order.

1, HVAC illumination keeps flashing randomly.
New HVAC unit and it still happens.
Different illumination feed (from the stereo, before it was from the cigarette lighter.) and it still happens.

2, Fluid leak of some sort.
Noticed over the last week or so that there has been little blobs of oily looking fluid below the car in certain places on the road. Mainly when going slow. Its more visible than normal cause of the rain and you get that pretty rainbow pattern.
I tried to work out where it was coming from due to the location of the mark on the ground but remembered I still got my under tray on, so that don't help much.
I checked the levels and the power steering was the only one that was low but I can't check the gear box fluid.
I'm going to go with the power steering fluid on this one but is there any common places for the power steering fluid to leak from?

3, gear box starting to act up when changing gear.
Many months ago gear box went in to limp mode due to a faulty sensor.
I replaced the sensor and all was well apart from the gear change from 2nd in to 3rd. This was really harsh and felt like driving a M3 SMG again (best description I could think of). I though it might be something to do with the box relearning due to a new sensor but its stayed the same with no change.
Now its kind of getting stuck in 2nd gear (I think).
Driving a long normally and stop or slow down where you need to be in first, pull away again and it revs like its in 2nd/3rd and then snaps in to 1st and causes you jerk down the road like a learner driver dumping the clutch. Its happen several times and I don't catch it it can cause some awful clunk/thud noises.
Part of me wonders if this has anything to do with fault 2 and its the box that's loosing oil.

4, Poor MPG. I think I know what it is but thought I'd put it here just in case someone else got another idea.
I think its the rubber return hoses on the injectors are leaking. They have been replaced 3 times since I've owned the car and each time its been generic rubber fuel hoses from the local motor factors. I'll pop to my local VAG garage and get some ordered up and I'll do a service at the same time.

5, Clicking central locking pump.
It clicks, for a really long time and loudly.
Its not the pump it self, cause all the doors are locked and its no longer pumping.
It sounds like a relay going mental for some reason. I've stood there for about 5 minutes and it was still clicking when I walked away.

6, Leaking EGR blank.
Hopefully a PD130 manifold and custom charge pipe will solve that.

I think that's it at the moment.
I've not had chance to do a VCDS scan yet. The joys of moving house, its all in a box somewhere.

its not that bad a list to be honest with you Scott.

I would tend to agree with you on the oil and box issues but hope there not linked...

but I do have a 5 speed box and all the stuff for a manual conversion...

the leaking EGR blank wont be helping youre MPG either and if the car is staying in gears longer this could also be a factor.

Its not a bad list but its a list and I don't like it. lol

You was doing so well on the 5 speed box and then the word manual came up and killed it for me. lol

I have a 2.5tdi, there's a cooler pipe runs from the passenger side in front of the radiator. It runs past the near side intercooler, and mine had been rubbing on the cowling for the intercooler causing a pin hole which leaked, slowly.
It's a bumper off job, 10mm fuel pipe and clips from Pirtek, £2 (or £78 for a new cooler pipe and more work). ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390901405266966cut the pipe where worn, and put in approx 3" of the fuel pipe in it's place, ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390901491015937clamp it tight and that will hold it no bother. I cable tied the hose to the cowling to support the cowling and stop any movement which could wear the hose

Sorry, forgot to mention the cooler pipe is for power steering, it's also low pressure, and the first pic only shows the bottom pipe after it's been cut off. Leave enough pipe to get some hose onto goes without saying.
I've had no more problems or power steering leaks since

You might be able to see if you take a fog light out. But if you're getting drips coming down from the back edge of the bumper where it meets the drip tray you'll probably have the exact same issue. You can clearly see the pipe through the bumper it simply goes in a 'u' shape about ten inches long in front of the radiator, black plastic coated aluminium pipe

I know the pipe.

There is a O-ring on the other side of the radiator?

I had all the front end off when I was fitting a new sump. I wonder if it could be that.

Car is booked in to the garage near work to check the gear box fluid level and top up if needed.

I had a look through the front grill and up to where your pics show the pipe work and I can't see any thing.

I will ask the garage if I can have a quick look underneath and see if I can spot any thing.

Car back from the garage.
Apparently the gear box oil was low. About half a litre was added.
I'll see what the drive home is like and see what happens.
I hope it sorts the gear change issues.
But the worrying bit is that there was no sign of any leaks.

That's the bumper hanger, the pipe is below that obscured by the cowling for the intercooler.
One thing I noticed with mine, the rear bottom edge of the bumper has gone softer and slightly sagged right below the drip. Try letting the engine idle then turn the steering a few times, that should make it leak a bit you'll see better where it's dripping from

1.9 TDI does not have cooler pipe for PAS. I'm not sure if automatics have it, but manual does not.

My 1.9TDi AJM Manual has a pas coller fitted and has no towing facility

I'm going to drop the bumper this weekend if I can get it in to the unit and see what I can see.

Here's a pic or two of the front end when we was doing the sump swap.
It might help you guys recognise something cause I don't.

The gear box still needs looking at.
the oil top up made a difference, its better but still not right.

Had a bit of a play on the way to work this morning and noticed its worse when its facing down hill. Its fine when facing up hill.
No idea if its oil, torque converter or valves but a bit more research is needed today.

To wet to get the bumper off to check for the leak this weekend and the unit was full up.
I'll try again to get that bumper off in the week.

The gear changes are doing my head in.
Driving around the weekend with the engine up to temperature and its fine, no issues.

I might get the oil changed again............I don't know. ahhhhhhhhhh

It does look a bit like that.

Its getting worse in the mornings.
If I take my foot off the throttle like I'm coming up to a junction or a bend, give it some throttle when I'm pulling out of a bend, it revs, snaps in to gear and then off it goes up the road.
If I try and catch it, to stop it from snapping to hard in to gear, we end up playing a game I like to call chase the gear. On the throttle a little bit, no gear, wait with foot off the throttle its in gear, foot back on the throttle and its off gear, it will do this till I'm at a almost stop or I just keep my foot on the throttle. Both of which is not really good.

I was going to do the oil change my self but lack of space and weather to do it, I'm going to have to pay a garage to do, so the fun starts trying to find a garage I'm happy with to do the work.

For the short time that the battery on the laptop lasted I was able to get this little screen pic of the gear box.

It looks like it thinks the gearbox or engine is spinning at 90rpm even though it was off.

Thoughts?

That's what I thought but that's engine speed.

Reading Elsa bout the measuring blocks.
This is what it says. I'm not sure on the first bit, bout 0 km/h 900rpm 0 0%.
Is that displaying what it should be displaying when resting?

Read measured value block 3⇒
0 km/h 900 rpm 0 0 %
1
2
3
4
Speed
Engine speed
Gear selected
Accelerator pedal value

There was no fault codes.

So I guess I'm still going down the oil change route.

I've already replaced the Gearbox speed sender (G38) last year.
Only external one left is Road speed sender (G68).

If there is somebody in the york area with vcds then I am happy to check the readings Scott - always happy to help a fellow slush box driver....

2 weeks have flown by and the Audrey is getting worse.
MPG on the DIS is now showing 31 mpg, the door handle on the drivers side has started to go lose and get stuck.
I also got stuck on my drive this morning.

Its on a bit of a hill but I had to park on it get the power lead out to the car to put VCDS on it.
VCDS showed no errors but it was acting a bit off.
I'm not sure if it was the car, VCDS or laptop.
Go into measuring blocks on the gearbox and it would load the data, then say there is no data, show the data, no data. its like it could not handle feeding live data. It needed to pause or time out between sending data.
I logged out and back in and it was better, it started acting like I would expect it to, live data and not timing out but it then got confused.
001 looked like 003 and 005 looked like 006, for example. it was all over place.

Not sure what going on.

But this morning I tried getting on the drive and nothing happened.
It just jumped around the gears.
When it did get a gear it was for a short period of time and creeped off the drive.
Once it was off and it was driving normally. As normally as it has been since this issue has started.

I contact a local gearbox specialist and going to get it booked in for a diagnostic and see what happens.
Depends on their answer depends on what happens.

If they come back and say a oil change will solve it, fine I'll do that.
If they say its more than that, valve body fault, clutch plate or something greater, I'll get the car home and parked up in the garage and leave it there. while I decide what to do. At the moment I'm thinking of making Audrey a weekend car, parking her up in the garage and leave it there. finish off my projects, fit a 5 speed auto box and leave it there while I buy another car and have that as a daily.

I'm not 100% sure, we'll see what happens.

Scott surely a weekend car deserves a 3rd pedal :racer:

Audrey has to be the worst weekend car know to man! Break her and buy an a8, you deserve it! :D

Garage tomorrow for gearbox diagnostics.

Also bought loads of bike gear to get back into cycling.
Hopefully the rest of my bits will turn up today tomorrow and I can repair my bike ready.
