Hi all

Got a gearbox issue and wondered if anyone can help?

Have a B5 Avant TDi, AHU engine code, 222000 miles. never let me down and still runs like a dream!!

Been upto Scotland for a few days and on the twisty stuff giving it a bit I dropped it into 3rd and it crunched going in. Took it steady and it was crunching but useable so i'm thinking the syncro's gone

Next day did about 60 miles with no problem other than the odd crunch and then slowing down to pull into the driveway and it crunched into 3rd and then i lost 1st and 2nd completely.

It's like the gate for 1st and 2nd isn't there - won't even try and engage so I thought it must be the linkage plus i struggle to downshift into 3rd now. 4th, 5th and reverse are fine but i'm guessing they're on different rails anyway.

Got back down to manchester ok setting off in 3rd slipping the clutch slightly but most of it was fast A roads and Motorway so wasn't too much drama.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if I do need a new box is the AFN box the same as it comes up as being the gearbox for the car when checking?

Thanks in advance
Steve

This happened to my sons S3 this year .He found that the pin in the link to these gears had broken.Sourced a good s/hand box and had it swopped and had the clutch and f/wheel changed having decided that the car was worth it

That's where I am Mike, it's far too good a car to break or get rid of!! I'd still set off round the world in it!

Just been out to have a look and although I can't really see much it appears it's had a second hand or recon box as it has DHF in yellow paint on the side of it!!

Hope you find a decent replacement its usually cheaper than a rebuild.Pity that a simple pin can lead to this

been recommended a transmission specialist in Halifax so went to see them today - he reckons the selector fork has come off - they are only riveted on and do go regularly after plenty of miles.

He's going to take the box out, rebuild it and put it back in for £155 plus parts which i'm fairly please with to say the least!!

cheers
Steve

That's seems good and cheap. The S3 is an awkward job but the replacement box seems fine and was from a much lower miles car.
