how easy is it to replace the front strut on a 1996 A4?

done the back but dont know what is involved in doing the front

You need to take the pinch bolt out the top of the upright, remove the three bolts holding the upper arm carrier, remove the lower shocker bolt on control arm and it should come free !!!

biggest problem is the pinch bolt if it's not been touched in a few years.

Get a new pinch bolt prior to starting the job. If the strut is out, I'd be temped to replace the upper control arms too.

When I took off my front struts,I undid the top 3 bolts,lower shock mount,then the 10mm nut holding the top mount to the strut and it was off.No need to touch the pinch bolt.
