Cutting out problems, any advice?

Hello everybody.

My A4 is having a problem which is too intermitant for me to be bothered to go to the audi garage.

Basically, every now and then it will decide it doesn't want to start. Well, it will start first time every time and will cut out a second after it's started, and everytime it will cut out at exactly the same point. Also just under the milage it has 'IN 2' flashing up when the ignition is on the first setting.

It also came up with the big red exclamation mark and the beeping this morning which I was sure was linked. But having read through another thread that seems to be a seperate issue. There was a big frost last night, so I think it's to do with that?

It would be much appreciated if any of you guy can shed any light on what my mentally unstable car is doing.

Cheers

Matt

Not sure if Audi is the same as VW but had problems a few years back with my Corrado which sound the same.

Car would start normally and then cut out after about half or one seconds running.

There is a chip reader around the ignition switch which confirms the presence of the chip in the ignition key once the engine is running. If it doesn't detect the chip it assumes the car has been started without the key and shuts down the engine.

First fix was to wiggle the wiring inside the steering column - the cables might be getting interferance from other cables.

Second fix was to unplug the cables, clean the connections and reconnect - a bit more tricky as the connection is not easy to get at.

Third fix was to replace the chip reader - about £40 from VW and an hour for my VW specialist to change it.

A local friendly specialist is worth its weight in gold!

Hope this helps

This is the message indicating a service is required..... IN1 and IN2 can be displayed - these are different service intervals.... In 1 is the yearly service inc oil change I believe and IN 2 is the 15,000 mile (and upwards) service including extra checks (the dearer one I reckon) ...

Check your owners manual it should tell you about the warning signal

If it starts then dies immediately it is the immobiliser cutting in. The reader coil in the ignition barrel (the bit that takes some signal off the ignition key) is known to play up and there was a DIY fix posted on here. I've had this a few times on my A42.8Q, but not enough to be bothered. If it happens I just take the key out then put it back in slowly leave it in the ignition for a few seconds before trying again. This normally works after a few go's.

My old one did this, new barrell ordered from audi 80 quid then half an hour labour to fit (didn't know of this place then)
seems to be quite a common prob. The immobiliser light used to flash on the dash when it didn't start.
