My 98 b5 is making a loud droning noise. I though it might be a wheel bearing.

The car is at my local garage today for its mot and they have initially suggested it might
be stepped tyres and are to get back to me later today.

I understand what they are, but is it common on the B5 and if so what is the most likely cause?

The tyres are continental contact sport 2 fitted to the front.

"stepped"?

Do you mean inner shoulder wear?

Usually caused by bad geometry, either from tracking, or worn out control arms.
