Having a nightmare with a vibration that seems to be coming from the f/n/s it feels like a wheel out of balance that starts at about 35mph and just stays. It really feels like something is loose in the suspension or steering but I've been under the car a couple of times and can find no play in any of the ball joints (which are all at most 18mnths old). When going down a bumpy road I get hollow clonk sometimes that you feel through the column and it wanders quite baddly on the undulating road surface and the transition between being on load and off load. It seems to be a continual fight to keep it pointing where I want it. Alignment and balancing has been checked and double checked and I've even swapped wheels front to back to no effect.
Wheel bearings from what I can gather are the originals as the service history up to when I got it on 78k mentions nothing of them and I haven't touched the fronts up until the 165k that's now on it. Is it possible these could be the problem?
Any ideas before I drop it on a VAG specialist? Fearing this could see the car being broken up if it can't be resolved :-(
